Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

They seem to be Ameraucanas. Which is good! I am not a Wheaten professional by any means. The darkest ones are usually the roosters, like the bottom pick. That is a Wheaten cockerel. Top pick on the right looks like a Blue Wheaten cockerel. IDK if there are any Splash Wheaten cockerels or not, I cannot 100% identify those. The lightest creamy ones are more likely the pullets. Like I said though, you can mistake a SW cockerel for a pullet, until the feathers grow out. The pullets will have color on the tail feathers, and primaries for sure. For anymore info, I would have to read my SOP. Hope this helps, I am sure that other more veteran folks will speak up!
They are for sure true Ameraucanas and the parents lay blue eggs. I'd say that maybe 4 or 5 eggs out of 30 where on the green side, but the rest were all blue.

I did my homework before I bought the eggs from this breeder, and did it only because parents were all true Ameraucanas and had all standards according to APA.

Veterans, experts, and everybody that knows more than I do, are already speaking up, but I was offline for a few days and only now having a chance to reply!!!

Thanks, any help is a great help!

Awesome!!! That's very helpful. I sent another post to someone else and I'll paste it here soon, maybe pics will be easier to identify the colors.

Hang in there, it's coming soon! I was offline for a few days so I'm catching up now.

After taking 500 pictures, I finally have more that might show better details. Didn't take bird by bird because I have 23... But here they go:

Boys? Blue Wheaten?

Boys? Wheaten & Blue Wheaten?

Girls? Blue Wheaten?

Blue Wheaten Boy?

From left to right: girl, boy, boy? colors?

On the left: blue or wheaten? boy or girl? how about the ones on the right?

A possible "handsome blue boy"??

I have 2 splashes. One of them is separated because the other ones decided to have a neckfest on her, so she's purple now!!!

Now some group pictures:

When is the best age to make sure boys are boys and girls are girls? I want to keep just a few girls and 1 blue wheaten boy (they are from different parents, so don't worry, no inbreeding!

), and it would be nice to have less birds to take care of...

Thank you so much!

No, if they are black they will stay black - but they might be split to both recessive white AND lavender... which means they will create all white chicks too.

I think the problem is that the white chicks and the lavender chicks look so close in coloring. The chick down may be showing the lav gene - but as they grow it gets covered by the two copies of the recessive white.

I hope Jerry stops in on this one- I believe he used whites to improve his Lavenders. I think he said he took out ALL the white birds - and any birds who produced white chicks when crossed to a white bird..?
Looks like I missed the discussion.I went fishing yesterday then fell asleep in the chair later.Looks like you figured it out.I used dominate white/black in large fowl.Easier to weed out.I used recessive white in the bantams. If you go back to a pure lav with your splits you will not throw any whites in the second generation. After that test your rooster on a white hen or hens.If he throws no whites use him.You can also test hens but it is a pain keeping each hen penned with 1 rooster. If your rooster is pure for lav then no whites will pop up.

Dom white would be a lot easier for sure. I may test mate each hen. I would like to keep a couple of splits if I can. I don't have a white roo yet but I do have some whites growing up.

The one White pullet I have has 1 or 2 white feathers on her belly..... maybe she is a split

For others trying to figure out their Wheaten/Blue Wheaten chicks, I did a collage of photos from weeks 2, 3, and 4 of my pullet and cockerel. The great folks here helped me figure out what was what. You might benefit from taking a look. The one labeled "Dot" is the pullet, the one labeled "Dash" is the cockerel. The original discussion is here.

I don't know if they are Wheaten or Blue Wheaten, but we know the gender! :)

And here are the pics

Got some better pics of my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana and I was wondering if anyone knows if he his a pure ameraucana, he apparently came from the breeder in marana AZ. Also he is molting right now so thats why he looks kinda funny
