Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

not as familiar with these, but that is very true with my Faverolles, esp the boys
Salmon is very similar to wheaten, and they develop pretty much the same
...in fact, I do not even begin to look at color until they are around 11 months old. I then select my show birds and figure out who is good breeding material. Here is a picture of a young fav roo, this particular guy is less "messy" then they often are

Here is a boy around 5-6 months, better but still very sloppy

and here is an 11 month old cockerel

They go through a ton of stages, basically have only 2 months they can be shown as cockerels LOL

Ok I have a question. Are these Ameraucanas or Easter Eggers? When I bought them I was told they were Araucanas, but Araucanas I believe are rumpless?

I wouldn't worry wait till these juvenile feathers are gone. Once the adult feathers come in id start asking. Ive had Blue Wheatens females go threw a white stage. and others like my Wheaten roo it took longer than 9 weeks to loose his white feathers and turn mostly black. I'm not a fan of judging them on their juvenile feathers that wont look nothing like the adult feathers.

I was only wondering on the sex of the chick so I can plan what I have to do with the extra males. I know not to judge feathers until they have full adult feathers in. I've watch enough birds grow up and get really different looking feathers in.

I'm actually most likely to keep a male based on temperament. They have a high bar to reach for. The older wheaten rooster I have is sweet to people and good with the hens. The younger cockerel I got from Tailfeathers takes care of chicks. He was trying to give scratch to the silkie chicks through the screen on the front of their coop a few days ago. Yesterday when they were out he was tidbitting them until their EE mama saw him. She was not amused. The poor boy. All he wants is a big family and all but one hen don't like him. When I've moved chicks into the main coop, he lets them snuggle under him.

I pick my roosters very much on temperament. Only nice boys get to stay here. I have the brother to your wheaten rooster. He is the sweetest rooster. He is always so excited about everything. He always calls the hens and chicks over for treats. I was trying to take pics of him the other day. He was being quite the character an would not stop clucking to me. I tried to find a good photo, but every pic he had his beak open. On closer inspection of the photos I realized he is holding a little pebble in his beak. He even tries to share treats with me.

I have a blue wheaton ameracauna, and all her eggs are an odd pinkish-brown. Is there any reason I'm not getting blue or green eggs from her?

The male I got from you is a darling. He's always talking. He'll come up annd tug on my pants or skirt to beg for treats. He doesn't snuggle with me anymore unless I take him inside where there are no hens to impress. I like to give him treats and let him pass them out. Only issue I have with him is that he's decided he doesn't like the Rocks anymore and will chase them off.

That is hilarious that your rooster was carrying a pebble around. I'd love to see that picture.

It's been a while since I checked in! Moved my babies into a larger pen this last weekend. Jean, your babies are feathering out nicely, and not even 4 weeks old! I have 12 that hatched, looks about an even split of blacks to blues (may be more blues than blacks). Can't wait to see them fully grown, looking gorgeous already!
