Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Well, not that my son in law is that much into chickens, his thing is cows. He bought the chicks for his kids and ordered ameraucanas and other kinds and that is what he thought they were. Anyway, it makes no difference. It's nice to know what the bird is finally. I thought it was probably an easter egger from what I have read and now you confirmed it. Sounds like you know your chickens. I was hoping for some different colored eggs but it looks like I'm not going to get them from he or she. Only time will tell. Thanks for the info.

Another query is why do they advertise Ameraucanas if they are not true As?!

You'll still probably get blue-green eggs if its a pullet, especially if it has a pea comb. EE's can lay any color but pea combs are linked with the blue egg genes.

And yes there are so many hatcheries and breeders that sell EE's as Ameraucanas (or "Americanas") that misinformation is more widespread than the truth. There's someone in here just about every day posting pics of EE's that they thought were Ameraucanas. The folks here try to correct people as politely as possible but having to say it so many times every week, occasionally someone gets hurt feelings. I haven't seen someone call us "the Ameraucana police" for a while though, so maybe its getting better lol.

Lol yeah I got tired of saying it so I just let others do it, or not say it at all.

Hatcheries do not sell any breed of chicken that is very true to the SOP.

Very true .

Maybe a new thread could be started called 'Helping ID EE vs. Ameraucana'. I think so many people ask that question on this thread figuring you folks would be the experts. I asked about the leg color because I read green = EE. I don't know how to tell as I am new to chickens. So I'm just trying to put puzzle pieces together. I do find it odd the types & frequencies of judgemental overtones Ameraucana buffs have on the whole EE ID question. People are asking for your help out of a genuine desire for knowledge & in respect of your knowledge/experience. Plus, some of these inquiring members may very well be a Breeder's great new customer. A little grace in information sharing couldn't hurt.

I didn't know Ameraucana's came in a blue color. I just love their little bear faces. She beautiful or maybe a he.

They do and it's my only, sorta hoping pullet but i just don't know.. probably is a cockerel afterall. I wish they could tell me, i'd even be happy if it crowed lol At least i'd know.

Looks like a hen to me, but mine are 21 wks and I have just decided on a couple. I don't see the dark feathers on the wing that a cockerel would have. Can't tell much more because you cannot see the side. She has a pretty little face. Is she missing her beard, or is it just difficult to see. My girls have their beards, but seems the like to pick the boys clean. Looking at the feathers in front, could this be a lavender vs a blue?

It was hard to get pics.. they won't stop moving and mama is very protective.. the breeder only has blues? (i bought hatching eggs) but i am lost on the differences between some of the colours that are similar. I can try and see if I can actually grab the bird.. they are 8wks coming this Sat so are slightly more independent, so a better chance of clearer pics.

Go here to see the recognized colors by the Ameraucanas Breeders Club. http://www.ameraucana.org/scrapbook.html

There are a couple of additional colors that have not been accepted yet, lavenders and blue splash. I guess we could add wheaten splash to that as well. My avatar is a blue splash, which I love. There is a forum on just lavenders where you can see their pictures and there is a picture of a wheaten splash on this board about 10 pages back. They look like the wheaten or blue wheaten, but with white feathers vs. the blue or black. I will qualify my posting with I am not an expert or anywhere close. I am still learning and much of it from this board. I have my first flock of Ameraucanas and they are 21 weeks old today. The previous year I had EEs that I bought from a hatchery that I thought was going to be AMs.

Where did you find the breeder? There are some that misrepresent what they are selling. I asked about lavendar because of the feathers being frizzled on the front of her chest, instead of being smooth.

I can't tell the genders (for sure) until about 12 weeks. This looks like a light blue to me because it looks like there is lacing around the feathers. Here is lavender hen:

I found this pic of a light blue hen.
