Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Be careful where you buy them.  There have been some folks that have gotten EE eggs sold as Ameraucana from a certain EBayer.  There is a for sell forum on BYC and I have seen a couple of our posters selling.  When you get ready, ask here for reputable breeders.  I am waiting for the girls of my first flock to lay.  I figure at the earliest I have another month to go. 

Yes, I'm aware of the struggle of finding *real* Ameraucanas. I called a local breeder the other day to ask what lines their Ameraucanas came from and what colors they offered. They said "oh, we have pretty much all kinds of colors, light ones and dark ones, I'm sure I could tell which ones would be light or dark when they grew up!" Me: "So, it sounds like they aren't really pure." Them: "they came straight from the hatchery, so I'm sure they're pretty much pure!"
Um, yeah, I'm not really looking for hatchery stock that's "pretty much pure"...

Cpartist on here has a very nice flock of wheaten and sells hatching eggs. I have seen her birds and they are very nice. She has a very good eye for breeding, and a great reputation for her shipping eggs hatch rate...

Hopefully I can keep track of these recommendations! Does she sell on byc or somewhere else?

Pearl is gorgeous! Do ypu have plans to breed EEs? That breed really interests me. It is funny that my 3 Polish are the dominant hens, the 1 we thought was the meekest & sweetest of all the flock has let our playful Pomeranian know that on no uncertain terms will he ever steal a treat or pester any of her flockmates. She crane kicked him in the face, karate kid style! Not just once, but every time he tried to play with any of them. He respects them now, after 3 crane kicks, lol. I am excited to see how it all plays out in flock dynamics when our final 5 are old enough to free range with the older 8. The oldest 5 sure are curious about them through the run fencing. Of all 13, the little Ameraucana is the friendliest toward people, followed closely by the Lavender Orpington. They are like little dogs, just hop right up on me & run to greet me.

Where in NC is Hillsborough? I am in TN, but within 50 miles of Asheville. I know there are others on the board from NC, just don't remember who at the moment. I have also seen some nice comments about LarkRise concerning her shipping eggs but I do not remember which color. She sells on BYC. I beleive DKRippey in Nashville does as well, again nice stock. Eggs are probably the way I will go in the future, simply because you do not have to buy as many and I have always had good luck using the styrofoam Hovabator(sp?). I do have to get a new one and I think I will get the type with the built in thermometer and humidity indicator. I also have the egg turner.

I am familiar with the pretty much pure. After a predator attack,I bought RIRs, unseen, locally for my laying stock and what I got was red chickens, one of which lays a white egg. This year, I bought my Ameraucanas from a very reputable breeder, and my Blue Wheaten cockerel did not feather out with the correct colors, so I have a "pure" that is an EE. Bummer. Still not sure what I am going to do with him.

I know this May sound stupid but I got my birds tested for 4h and the paper is mark pullorum and typhoid free then there's a Npip certification number so am i Npip

Your whole flock isn't, just that one bird is. To have a whole flock certified there is a minimum number you have to do.

No . They use the same form for testing form for sale birds and birds going to a show . Good for 30 days I believe . in IL only the state vet can do the NPIP certification test . After that anyone that has the testing certification can do the annual renewal test .

From what I can tell, several breeders outcross to try to correct type, then sell birds that are 7/8 "pure". These, of course, have hidden genes that can display at random times. It seems pretty hard to find truly pure poultry, but I'm up for the challenge.
BTW, Hillsborough is pretty much as central as it gets in NC, 4 hours to the east/west borders, and 2 hours to the north/south borders. But if I don't find a breeder locally, I'd still prefer to order eggs from neighboring states, if only to slightly reduce transit time....

One of the things to remember...
The Ameraucana is still a fairly new breed and there is still much "work" being done and much work left to do!

Tiger creek...Those Eight Acre Farm birds are really good looking birds!
