Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

The White Ameraucana in my avatar got impacted crop. After 4 days of trying to unblock her crop. I called the vet but couldn't get her in to the only vet that worked on chickens. He was out for 4 days. She was so thin I know she wouldn't have made it till then! I did something I never on a million years thought I would ever do! It was life or death!!! My husband and I did crop surgery on her three days ago. She handled the surgery well and I put her on antibiotics. She is eating and drinking. I never knew I could get so attached to her! Before I did surgery on her. I put her in the pen with the other chickens just to get her out of her cage. I left for like 5 minutes and she spotted me and came running to me and leaped into my arms. She wants to be with me at all times! What a love she is! When we did the surgery I was trembling but didn't want her to die. Lots of prayers and tears! I hope she makes it! Doing well so far!

Oh my gosh, you're brave!! I've dealt with a couple of cases of sour crop, but I'm not sure I could do what is necessary for impacted crop. Kudos to you!!

Oh, wow, you are amazing! I hope she has a full recovery. One of my black beauties has sour crop now and (with some advice from Susan) I am trying to get him through it. Good luck!

Wow! Great to read. Happy all worked out so well! Kern

Thank you everyone! If I hadn't tried everything in the book and loved her so much! I don't think I could have done it! I still can't believe I did that! She at least has a chance and know I did all I could do for her. I would have payed the $300.00 at the vet. Not sure my husband would agree! Any other chicken would have probably gone to freezer camp but she is very special!

Great job!! :highfive:

Will keep :fl for her and you!

Hope she continues to recover well, Marchick. What did you find in the crop?

It was a ball of grass and fiber about 3 inches wide. I always put grit out for them. I always thought that since they had grit they would not have a problem. No more grass for them! I only let them out once in a while. Sometimes in the evening about an hour or so before dark. Now I will be over protective!

When I give grass, I shred it, by hand, so no piece is longer than 2-3". So far, that's worked.
