Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I got my first eggs from this year's pullets today.

Collecting blue eggs never gets old! These came out of my wheaten/blue wheaten/splash wheaten pens. The pullets that I kept in my other color varieties are not quite old enough to lay yet.

Don't know if it's just me but it seems the BW/B Wheaten variety shows up most on this thread with the bluest of the Ameraucana egg color. I know my BW gave bluer rather than blue-green like my friend's Amer. Our BW was a sweet bird -- she accepted chicks around her and made them feel comfortable when the other breeds wanted nothing to do with them. We lost her in July and miss her.

So sorry for your loss!

I love the temperament of our wheaten/blue wheaten/splash wheaten flock. The girls are so calm and friendly. Last year one of my favorite pullets would fly up to my arm and perch on it. I am excited to see a pretty blue egg color in this year's pullets. I had narrowed down by potential breeders for 2017, and was waiting on them to start laying to see if I would need to do any culling for egg color. I am also excited about the egg color in my self blue/lavender pens. This year's white pullets and blue/black/splash pullets are not quite old enough to lay yet. When we first started with whites, I brought in a couple of different lines and had to do some culling for green eggs. Some of the eggs bordered on olive. They found a new home in our layer flock. :) Always striving for pretty blue eggs. I have always "heard" that blue/black/splash lay some of the prettiest blue eggs. On the opposite end, I have always heard egg color is a struggle with silvers. Of course, I am sure that some of that depends upon the bloodline and other variables. :)

TY! And yes, the temperament of our BW was the best. She was shipped with a sibling but the other pullet died before POL. We had to re-home a lot of other production dual purpose breeds with too assertive behavior before our sweet girl felt comfortable enough with us and the remaining gentle breeds of Silkie and Breda in the flock. She was always overly cautious, wary, and alert but let us pet her when the yard and flock were calm. Loved her blue eggs and they got up to 2.5-oz sometimes but she was not a prolific all-year-round layer. She hated our humid climate and only thrived when the days were cloudy or rainy. I thought we lucked out getting blue eggs from our girl since many say they get greenish or blue greenish eggs from their Ams. But I noticed a lot of BW/W owners on this thread say they get their bluest eggs from them. I got a 4-mo-old Blue (BBS) Amer juvenile but lost her before POL because the breeder shipped her with worms plus cocci and she was ill for a while before we got her according to the vet - he couldn't save her. I haven't had luck w/Ams in our humid region. Out of 3 Ams only one lived and only to 3 yrs. I would love a couple more BW/W Ams but our girl suffered so much from our humid weather I won't subject another heavy under-downed breed to our climate again. These girls seem to love and thrive better in the cold.

I have 2 19 week old Black Ameracauna chickens and I am fairly certain I know their sex, but was hoping someone more experienced than me could confirm

I believe this one is a rooster:

But the only reason I think that is because his comb is larger than the other one. He does not crow and avoids all fights. (To be fair, the other roosters I have are considerably larger ...)

I would be surprised if this one wasn't a lady:

Thanks so much for any help
