I was in a local feed store and they got baby chicks in while I was there. I asked what kind of chicks they were and they said Ameraucana. I told her if they came from a hatchery, they are probably Easter Eggers. She got mad and said they sold them as Ameraucana and they lay green and blue eggs and she is not going to get into it with me. IMO the hatcheries are to blame more than the store owners who just buy and sell chicks. While the store owner may honestly not know. The hatchery should know. It's their business to know. It's misrepresentation. I don't understand why they continue to do it knowing those chickens are not Ameraucana.
Yes, the hatcheries hold the primary blame, I don't understand it either. But I don't like the attitude of the store owner. The fact that she said they lay green or blue eggs means she DOES know they aren't Ameraucana (if she even knows the SOP 'features'). Iffn I were to own a store I would sure like to know that I was misled. Might still order the birds from the same place but you can bet the order form for customers and the sign over the chicks would say Easter Egger.
