Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Well, they need a bath

, but other than that, they have nice type, full beards, and nice combs. The dark blue dots on the birds aren't very good, but the're decent quality

I agree its pretty muddy where I am but the type on those girls is pretty nice. The dark blue dots aren't ideal but they are pretty. They aren't lavender or self blue but they are regular blue. I can't really tell about their lacing in that picture.

Thanks,
Henry

In my defence....
I just got them.
They are in quarantine.
It's too cold to bath them. I know they are dirty.
Was told that I needed to find a Self-Blue Roo.
However, they look darker then other Self-blue hens that I have found pictures of.
If they have the gene for Lavender will they not produce lavender, black and splash?
If they are Blue what will they produce if crossed with Lavender?

Zac S. Orig. 7 hatchery :

In the MMH catalog, it shows birds with rumps labeled as Aruacanas. What is the def. of a true aruacana??

Visit Araucana.net for complete info on what an Araucana is. The site is very informative. Murray McMurray does not have Araucana or Ameraucana even thought they claim to have them.

Yvonne,
In your defense I believe your birds may need to go thru their yearly molt. I had gotten blue Orpingtons that looked like that till they molted. The sun changes their color sometimes.
Chances are your birds are not split lavender unless the breeder had bred a blue to a lavender. You can get away with using a black rooster and get 50% blacks and 50% blue Ameraucanas.

Thanks for info,
They are not laying now either, I presummed it was because of being moved, not being feed enough, etc, etc, etc.
Was just hoping of finding out the color from BYC members that have Blue Ameraucana's.
Too bad they didn't come with Registration papers.

I agree that they are blues. Blue comes in many shades and is a different gene than lavender/self-blue. If you breed lav to lav, you only get lav. Doesn't work like the blue gene, where you get blue, black or splash if you breed two blues. Here is one of my blues, Nora:

speckledhen,
I'm hoping that I have found a Lavender Roo
So, If they are Blue and I breed with Lavender what will I get?
Previous owner said If I breed to a lavender I would get black, Lavender or splash. I have found posts on breeding for colors, however they are referring to other breeds of chickens. So does it apply to Ameraucanas also?
