Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Happy announcement ...
I got my Ameraucanas from Paul Smith today. They appear healthy and full of vigor! I am so happy to have them! I was gonna post a picture, but that is silly. You all know what a new hatch Ameraucana looks like!

Hi Everyone!

We are starting a flock of Bantam and LF Ameraucanas and I was wondering what colors can run with what and still have breed standard colors? I know that you can run Blacks with Blues and Splash (I know its not a standard color but splash and black make 100% blue.. right?) What about the other colors?

I like the looks of the black, blue, wheaten, blue wheaten, and lavender. Who can I run with who?

Thanks,
Krystal

Are Ameraucanas generally poor at foraging? I thought I found the perfect breed for my yard but I have noticed that some of mine have no clue as to what to eat. They will eat dandelions and clovers if I pick them for them but not on their own. Also, when I throw worms in there for them my mutt hen (who was hatched with them) gets all the worms while the Ameraucanas stand there looking at the spot where the worms used to be. I would just prefer that in the summer they would forage for some of their food.

It depends on what you want to breed. Yes, black x splash will give you 100% blue. BBS and lav can all run together and produce BBS and split lavenders. The wheaties can all run together and you can get whetaen, blue wheaten and splash wheaten (depending on the color of you breeding roo).

My Lavender Ameraucanas (and Black/Lavender splits) are super foragers. My other colors are so-so, but prefer to gulp down feed as fast as I can fill the feeders.

I have noticed the same thing. Compared to my other chickens, the Ameraucana, and the Easter Eggers are not too sharp when it comes to getting food. They seem a little slow, honestly! With foraging, and also with getting the treats that I throw to them.
