Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have to brag about what a great deal I got yesterday...I was buying a few bantam lav chicks (from another BYCer that happens to be local - woohoo!) AND she said that she had an incubator full of ready-to-lockdown eggs and hadn't planned very well, as she was heading out of town the day they were due...so I got 35 more bantam lav eggs for only $30! I know moving them was risky, but we both brought incubators plugged into our cars, and didn't handle them at all, just transfered egg cartons from one bator to the other...and 2 have already hatched, it's only day 20!

eta: Parent stock is all John Blehm, same as my blacks, and the egg color is MUCH bluer than I expected from lavs!!!

Can anyone tell me if this Lavender's lack tailfeathers is due to a slow feathering gene, and if so, should he be excluded from breeding? The next pic will be of a hatchmate with a normal tail. They are 6 and 1/2 weeks. Thanks.

Could be that the top is a male and the bottom is female.....looks that way to me. The males usually get their tails a little later than the females, at least mine do, and the bottom one looks to have thinner leg/shanks where the top one has thick ones like a male would have.

Maybe, but in a pen of 21 Ameraucanas, this is the only one with this feature and surely there are other males in there.

Yea, probably do have more than one male in there, lol! If not, what's your secret?

I have a few young cockerels that are harder to tell from the females than others, so possible that some may have the slow feathering gene, but odd that only the males would have it.

Here are some pics of the black roo from Juliect. She had better (outside) pics a few pages back. He is really big for 5 months! He has a really nice crow too

Dak- I have a little lav girl that looks just like that! Still no tail- but when she's next too a split roo you can totally tell she's a girl. I'm hoping the feathering will catch up eventually- but it's sooo hot now I think she's lucky!

You should see Vegas then, he is even bigger. The two splash roos have grown at a normal pace, but the two black roos have apparently been eating an extra bowl of Wheaties.

Your roo is on the right, Vegas is on the left.

I was going to bring you Vegas but when I got to the run, Coyote was already in the smaller section I use to herd them into to make it easier to catch for their weekly inspections. He was just standing there like, "Come on, I've got people to meet and places to see", so I took that as a sign from the universe that he was the roo for you.

As soon as I find homes for Vegas and Curly, I would like to buy some EE or Amers pullets from you, when you have some available for sale.

Curly is on the left, he is my other splash looking for a new home. Mercedes is on right, he is the roo I'm keeping. But if someone doesn't adopt Curly soon, I fear I will change my mind and keep him too.

Gah! It is so hard parting with these guys when you've raised them from chicks.
