Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I saw one person post here about their brown-reds, otherwise, I honestly don't know. They are indeed very rare and hard to come by. I would think John Blehm offers chicks, but otherwise, perhaps someone else here knows.

I for one am definitely going to offer all the Buffs I can next year - I love the color, and I love working on rare varieties, plus I love a challanging variety, so once my birds go at least into F1 stage I'll offer to those who want to work on them then second gens to those who just want BUFFS.

I really want to get it out there, the rare colors.

Also I want to stop this nonsense about people's "buff ameraucanas" that are actually brown and black Easter Eggers.

Big difference people. Look up Buff and truly look at the color difference. Not that hard.

Thanks, Harris5. The link was very helpful.

The decision has been made. I will be ordering lavender, black and silver. My hubby liked the silver, and we do not have anything like that here. John Blehm's chart rated his silver ameraucanas as having the best egg color, and that is one of the things I am after. They were not the most docile, but I think since I am only going to order a small number of these that I can keep them separate and eliminate some issues that way.

I agree, Mahonri, the wheatens are just beautiful. I have black copper marans, however, and their coloration is so similar I wanted to steer toward something totally different. I have about a half dozen BCM roosters that I keep that roam the yard, and I just love having them wandering around out there. They are really pretty, and they follow me like puppies looking for a handout. The same goes for the buffs, as I have buff orpingtons already. Since my hubby is the one who takes care of the chickens when I am working sometimes, I felt it was only fair to give his opinion consideration.

I'm not real fond of whites (I guess I just like colors!) I have one white chicken. It is a rooster.. OEGB bantem. He is kind of mean. Today when I went outside there were a bunch of white feathers scattered in the yard. I went right away to check on the little white roo. He was fine. With no other white chickens on the place I am not sure where these feathers came from. (None of the neighbors have chickens, and the closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.) I have finally decided it was probably a migrating snow goose that was taken by a coyote, and then our great pyrenees probably ran the coyote off and took his booty. I have no other explaination.

I've got a couple really nice looking silver pullets, but they are convinced I will kill them and they shriek at me. The wheatens don't seem to be quite so hysterical. We hatched about 20 silver cockerels out this past spring and every one of them had wonky combs, so they went to freezer camp. Anybody have or know where I can get a BQ or SQ silver cockerel, or someone want to trade for a wheaten?

Ivywoods - -

As far as Ameraucana temperament, I have had blue, black, buff and now a silver - - and I have not found any of the colors to be particularly docile or laid back. . . even when hand raised. They were all just gorgeous, but none of them have ever been my snuggle buddies.

They seemed best suited to large pens or even free ranging.

Has anyone else had a different experience? It could somewhat depend on the line.
