Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Not a waste of space ~ in fact many people who have Ameraucanas also have EEs and love them too.

Your girls are beautiful ~ esp the black one.

Absolutely! I have both, love them both, though I'm partial to my BBS Ameraucanas. Lost my Charlotte yesterday, sadly-she was 4 yrs old.

Hello everyone,
I have a question. I just got a bunch of Amercuanas for 4H and FFA. When you have a wheaten amercuana rooster over blue Amercuana hens, would their offspring be blue-wheaten Amercuanas?

I am new to Amercuanas but I also got my hands on a silver penciled hen. What could I breed her to in order to get a recognized color combination?

I have a question I want to get some true Ameraucana's for my flock I am not going to be breeding them. My question do breeders sell their breeding culls just for egg laying flocks. I would love to have some blue eggs in my basket. I lost my only Ameraucana this last winter. Thanks for any help with this question.

No, it would not get you Blue Wheatens. To get recognized colors you need to breed two of the same color together.

That, or these colors do well together:

Black x Lavender

Blue x Black

Black x Splash

Splash x Blue

Wheaten x Blue Wheaten

schellie69 - Yes. I myself am selling some hens that I'm no longer using, but the thing of course is to find someone local to your area.

Nooo no no- don't combine colors of ameraucanas. And there is no such thing as a silver-pencilled ameraucana. Wheatens should stay with wheatens, BBS should stay with BBS, and so on.

schellie69-I just got my first ameraucana chicks. I won't have any ready to lay for a while, but I will probably pare down the numbers later this summer or fall, depending on what I end up with.

When I lived where you are they used to have a swap meet every month at the Orscheln's store parking lot. It was on weekends during the spring and summer months. I don't know if they still do that or not. You might check with them at Orscheln's. We sold quite a few birds there, and even managed to pick up a trio of super nice show birds there one time.

I did 27 Wheatens at the same time and lost none so I will tell you what I did. It sort of became the running joke: "What 'ya doin' Hunny" "Cleaning chicken butts again sigh".
First thing in the morning, every few hours, last thing at night. Clean the butts. After a while I realized that by softening it under running WARM water, I could just pull it off taking a few of the feathers with the "obstruction". They did complain a little but better that than the alternative. Those with the fewer feathers pasted up less often.
I would take them out, 1 at a time and clean them. 2 at a time were then taken to the couch for "lap-time". Afterwards, each had their time in our laps until warm and comfy. Then they went into a box and the next one would come out until there were no more. I started with 2 because they are so social and scared when they are alone. I did this until they were all done and in the done-box. Then they all went back into the brooder until the next "butt check".
Hope that helps.

Thanks I will have to check I have not seen or heard about any swap meets but I will ask next time I am in there. I just want to add some color to egg basket. Want blue. dark chocolate eggs and maybe some green and olive green eggs. The people who buy my eggs really love the different colors.

Hi. I don't know if this is the right place to post, but figured ya'all could point me in the right direction if not. I'm looking to get some show-quality ameraucana bantams. I am willing to buy hatching eggs or to meet in CT, NY, MA, RI for chicks or started pullets or hens. If anyone has any available, could you please PM me.. or let me know of any breeder you can recommend. The birds will be shown, but not bred. Thanks!
