Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Illia, a compliment from you is the highest praise ever!!! The best thing about these (other than they are jump on your back friendly) are they are very productive. I am averaging 8 eggs a day from 11 pullets/hens.
They (the pullets) have been laying since October. The hens have laid 10 out of 12 months. The worst thing..they are extremely broody. I've had to break two already, now have two more. While I love to let them hatch
and raise chicks...I am concentrating on marking and identifying offspring....tough to do with a broody. Also, the bator raised are more people friendly. I wish the broodies would just GET OVER WITH IT

I think that's a little unfair to say honestly - I've got very, very little personal experience with Ameraucanas when comparing to some other breeders out there, judges even, - For example Pips&peeps. I just like researching, comparing, and, umm, talking.

NO pasty butts this morning. Perhaps I am "over the hump" now with these wheaten chicks. It seems like they have started eating MUCH more just in the last two days. I wondered if they were eating enough the first couple days. I don't need to worry about that now!

The replacements for my silvers that were lost in shipping are on their way. I hope they survive this trip better. I think it will be an easier trip this time because the weather is warmer. I think they got cold last time, crowded in under each other and got smooshed.

I use old stock tanks for brooders. I made welded wire covers for them so barn cats can't get into them. We have several of these old tanks. They sure work well. No corners for the chicks to crowd into, and we have several of these old tanks that no longer hold water. The chicks are out in the shop, and temperature control has been a little difficult. Warm during the day, cold or cool at night. The tanks are big enough, however, that they can get quite a ways away from the heat light if it is too warm, and of course get closer to the heat when it is cold out. When the chicks are ready to leave the brooder, I can just clean out the poop and shavings (compost) and hose the whole thing out, spray some disinfectant and let it air dry.
