Here is a picture of my new bantam black pair. They're still really young. about 4-5 months old. Roo just started crowing a sad little crow.

And my first Wheaten baby from my own pair. There is one more hatching right now.

I received my American Standard of Perfection 2010 book from the APA yesterday, and really like it. It answers a question I've long had about that eruption of fluff often seen between the saddle, or cushion, and tail on many Ameraucanas [SADDLE: Medium in length, abundant, providing smooth transition to angle of tail. ...... CUSHION: Moderate, providing smooth transition to angle of tail.] There are colored illustrations of both sexes in Brown Reds, Silvers, and Blue Wheatens; and between the written descriptions and illustrations, goes far in setting the ideal appearance of the Ameraucana to breed towards. Also, it specifies tail angle for both sexes at 45 degrees rather than the 40 degrees listed for hens on the ABC site???

I'm starting to thin the flock a bit and need some advice on my buff project. I know we are supposed to cross them with wheatens, but why exaclty?

It appears that I actually DO have some pullets- in my Meredith buffs

I have a few Ramey roos and 2 chicks from Jean. The Ramey roos are lovely. One of them has Star Wars-worthy blue legs that look incredibly strange on a buff bird, but he also has black eyes

I want to keep him around anyway- maybe for some lemon-blue-ish EEs or something.

One thing I want to work toward is productivity. How are the buffs, as far as laying goes? My wheatens are awful and I really don't want to pass on that dissappointing trait.

Also- still have a few lavs available. An adult pair and some chicks. I am not going to hatch any more of them til next year when my Crystalcreek's Smith roo is mature. A tornado took out 2 huge poultry houses not 4 miles from me and there are free "tornado chickens" all over the mountain and I can't give away chickens, let alone sell them.
