It's a typical EE color, but very pretty! The females of this will look like a typey EE too - Brown and black marked. It's genetically Golden Duckwing w/Columbian, not a recognized color, but common with EE's.

I did think that I saw what looked like "duck wing" on him. But he didn't match any of the known color types.

His legs are slate through and through. He also walks funny on his three front toes, with the side toes folding back as if he walks on his knuckles....just a weird foot, but not as weird as the roo at my feed store, he has seven toes or more on each foot....WEIRD.

Are his soles white or yellow?

He's an EE anyway, I'm just curious to know.

The toe thing is common in some EE's, my last EE had curled toes too. Poor boy had curled toes on BOTH feet. I hear it is common with McMurray hatchery.

A couple of you have posted your girls aren't laying well. Is this a trait of the breed to be a bit temperamental about laying? Or are certain 'lines' temperamental? Or is it the time or year/moult? I guess what I'm asking are they consistent layers throughout the year?

Jeremey, I think your pullet is beautiful.

It is both strain and time of year.

I have a blue hen from lines in which they just don't lay that much, but I've also got some Blue Wheatens from lines who are very reliable, however, there's also molting and broodiness that must be considered too.

I have some beautiful Lavender Ameraucana hens from great lines. I noticed that they have some feathers (not very many) on their shanks. I have 6-8 pullets about 6 months old. To cull or not to cull is the question. Since the lavenders are a project how long would it take to breed out this trait?

I have Lavenders, Blacks and Splits from a different line that I could use. Just trying to decide...its hard to let them go

But of course you can't keep them all. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have a question. Just so excited to have my chicks, I am studying them..lol I am sure I could just wait to see how they feather out but I am just curious.

Here are two black chicks but they look different from each other. They are from black roo and black hens pen. Wondering why their coloring is a little different? One is much blacker and does not have the little white eyebrows.

Also it's fuzzy butt is grey instead of yellow. It was kinda hard to catch a good photo but you can see that they are kinda a different color.
Is there black and then blackblack?

Not much difference really, although solid black ones may possibly end up with Gypsy face (blackened comb, face) but usually more white just means less dark pigment, which in black birds, you'd hardly notice.

ALL black colored chickens have varied chicks with no white to lots of white.
