Kathy... thanks for test hatching for me 2x. There is much work to be done on these...getting clean hackles on the
boys w/ solid tails and nice solid color tails on the girls. All of mine have had muffs/beards, so happy I don't have to have to deal
with eliminating this recessive. My main focus has been keeping/breeding the ones with the best type and size. I have
a few boys with cleaner hackles and a few girls with more solid colored tails. I have not culled for egg color yet, as they are all
laying some shade of blue, aqua or turquoise. They are great layers when not broody (often) or molting. I hope and think I have
what I need to move forward without outcrossing.

Regarding the beard color...my year and half olds are finally getting solid black/blue beards. This seems to be the last thing to
color properly on these. My older cock birds still have some wispy white around the face, though. Definitively something to select
and breed for.

IMO color is secondary. My random weighed pullets weigh in at 5.6 lbs.... standard for pullets is 4.5 lbs.

I am such a newbie compared to others that have breeding these for years...but think type/size first,
then color issues is the best way to breed these going forward.

They look like the real deal to lil ole inexperienced me. I would say the one on top is a pullet. Bottom one could be a cockerel. Ameraucanas can be total stinkers to sex, in my experience. Hopefully others with more experience will chime in with their opinions. Welcome to the wonderful world of Ameraucanas!!!

I think one of my Black Ameraucana pullets is about to lay her first egg. She will be 22 weeks old tomorrow. She has been stocking the roos like a brazen hussy for the past week and today she is scoping out the deepest, darkest corner of one of the nest boxes.

Yay! Best when they start about now, or it seems like they'll wait til after the solstice. It always works that way for me anyway. The blacks have awesome egg color- hope its super blue, and soon!

The Wheaten color of AM's body should be light creamy wheaten like the OEG's. Free of the shafting as seen in that dark female. It is very difficult to get consistent Wheaten color in females of most breeds for some reason.

Walt

That is good to know. If I ever propagate Ameraucanas I will certainly have to study up on them. I have these birds because I did test hatches for Luanne (cpartist), and because I love the pretty blue eggs!

Didn't think a propagator like you would mind if I run down the color of your birds and we haven't had a good fight for a year or so.....

Maybe one of the genetics experts can tell me why female chickens are harder to get proper color in than males. Not all females, but Wheatens, blue wheatens, red pyle, ginger red, blue breasted red, etc, etc.
