What color is the bottom of their feet? If it's pink, then you are good. If it's yellow, they are not purebred Am's. I do think that some of my lighter slate legged breeds have had a slight greenish tinge while they were growing up. Leg color definitely gets darker as they get older. Some are even born with pink legs and don't get the nice slate color for months!

Thanks, Mama24. I finally got a chance to go out and catch them and have a look. The bottoms of their feet are pink with a greenish cast. They are definitely not yellow. I will watch them as they get older. Their beards are growing in beautifully. I trust the BYC breeders and if they say they are real Ameracaunas, I believe them.

I posted these pics earlier in the "what breed or gender" forum, but got no opinions on the breed. I hope you all don't mind another ID question! The egg this little chicken came from was from a blue wheaten Ameraucana, with both a blue wheaten Ameraucana and a blue Orpington rooster in attendance. She (this is optimism!!) is just about 5 weeks. What do you think, a pure Ameraucana hen? Or something else? Thank you!!

Thank you, tailfeathers! So, are there any characteristics can I look for in the hens I pair him up with to help with his wing and tail color or will I have to just wait and see?

Well, I'm definitely not the best person to ask that question of as I'd point you to the ABC Forum and recommend asking some of the Old Timers. I've said it before but it bears repeating, most of what I learn is from the School of Mistakes. In other words, when I try something if it works, I keep doing it. If it don't work, I don't do it anymore.

Having said that, as for the red edging in the tail, I just kept culling any birds that had it. I started with those birds that had the least amount of it and kept going until I had a few show up with no edging at all. None of my males have it now - though some of their offspring still does so I'm not sure if that's being passed on my the males or females.

As for the wing color, I would have to guess that you would want to find females that had full color in their primaries and secondaries. That's my best educated guess. Hope that helps.

Legs appear to be yellow, clean face. Not likely Ameraucana. Can't see the comb well enough to guess at gender.

It has to be from not-so-great wheaten ameraucana stock. She's be fine for an EE pen or olive egger project. The blue orp couldn't be the father or she wouldn't be that color. Orps have white skin as well. .

Oh I really hope so! Can you see her legs well enough in this photo? I can take another photo if not.

Also, she doesn't have a beard now, but when she hatched she had big puffy cheeks and puffy down under her chin--a big contrast to the barred rocks that hatched at the same time. Will she stay clean faced like this or is it possible she just doesn't have her beard yet? Hope springs eternal

HappyMtn, I agree, since my understanding based on what I've read here is that she shouldn't have so much dark coloring. She'll be for eating eggs only, we don't (and can't) have a roo. She has a wonderful personality, and I'm just hoping so hard that she's a she! I also like the way Ameraucanas look and I'd still love her if she was half Orp, but am happy to hear she's not. She was a bonus egg and I love her to pieces, no complaints here!

I am not a professional by any means. I am pretty sure you wouldn't of gotten blue wheaton with the blue orp. With that being said blue wheaton legs are not slate until they are older. Don't worry about the muffs yet...............if she had them as a chick, some of them go through a rough phase, and loose them until around 3 months. Just give her some time...............

Am I the only one that thinks this looks like a roo? Comb looks a little pink for 5 weeks.

That's what I'm worried about, Trish! Never seen a baby Ameraucana before and my others are all single combed ... so much easier to tell. The other suspicious activity, while completely adorable, is the jaunty angle of her (?) tail--like a roadrunner. A very vocal little soul too.
