Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

My Ameracauna eggs are hatching! I have 3 piping and peeping! I'll post pictures when they hatch. I really want a splash even though they are not a recognized color. We'll still show in 4-H the splash color if allowed. I'm excited as this is the breed of my dreams. These first few were not cheap eggs either, they better not be Easter eggers for the price I paid.

Oh how exciting!!!! Did you get those from a breeder? I hope you get some really good show stock from this hatch

Well, I haven't read the whole thread; I don't come to this forum for an argument! However, after raising and falling in love with this breed, I had no interest in EEs. Until last fall when my amazing and beloved Welsummer rooster was taken by a fox.

I immediately placed some of my Wheaten eggs in the incubator, and now have a pair of the sweetest and most beautiful Welsummer X Wheaten Ameraucanas you have ever seen! The cockerel has his father's coloring and sweet disposition, with a dark beard. And the girl looks just like a blend of the two: a very pale-colored pullet with Welsummer markings. I can't wait to see what her eggs look like! So, yeah.... I now love EEs too!
I believe welsummer x ameraucana = olive egger (OE) I love olive eggers!! There's an OE thread you can follow. :)

It was back during the last EE vs Ameraucana fight. Cooper said specifically Lavs had no place on the forum because they are a not recognized color, thus an EE. I posted one for sale and s/he told me to cull it.
You know what i am not sure why he/she would say that cause i just purchased chicks for spring from one of the top breeders (Paul Smith) of Lavenders so now i must ask if this is taboo as some seem to claim it is why would this breeder be breeding them and selling them? I know they are not recognized YET! But that's only because it takes several breeders to breed them to standard and get them recognized once they breed true etc.. SO don't cull it breed it and enter them in AOV in the shows and let's get them recognized. I love Lavenders, Blues and blacks as well as Splash colors are not a bad thing at all. Different strokes for different folks ya know

I wonder how long it will take to get those two colours recognized (Lavender and Splash). Splash especially should be recognized. It's definitely a colour and is a result of blue x blue matings. They breed true 100% of the time when bred back to splash. :/

I could not tell you but i totally agree i love splash! From what i read on the ABC forum if let's say 5 breeders got together and bred them true and got all their ducks in a row regrading SOP features and such i would think it would be possible to get them added all it takes is true dedication to the breed and then approval from the ABC. I also read there are several folks in that club working on projects as well.

It's all about making the perfect bird after all or as close to perfect and then add that touch of color and voila you have a new color ahhhh sound so simple but not LOL

I think the club is fairly close to putting lavenders up for inclusion. Splash might be a little further away because many folks working with blue (which is what splash really is, a double copy of the Bl gene) aren't so keen on splash because they don't breed entirely "true" or predictably. The spots wash out and the bird becomes simply white when splash is repeatedly bred together. Blue breeders often shy away from using their splash birds if they are happy with the "blue" they are getting from using visually blue birds. You don't necessarily know what blue you will get out of a splash breeding. BUT!! As pips&peeps always points out - get them out and show them. That is the surest way to get them recognized. (There are now 2 bantam breeds that recognize splash - Silkies being one of them - so the APA is up for it now.)

The only splash I have in bantam is the least up to type unfortunately. I have agreed to show every bantam Ameraucana I have, as that was one of the stipulations when I got them. That and breeding them. He wants me to help promote the breed in my area.

My first hatch was from eggs from Jean. I sayed up all night so I could see who hatched from which egg. (Somewhat OCD myself). These joined my chicks from Paul Smith which arrived the next day.

I ordered more Blacks from Paul this spring, in hopes of getting a nice cockerel. Unfortunately, I seem to get 75% pullets from Paul each time. I know that is not something to complain about, but I would really like a nice boy to make more Lav/Self-Blue splits with.
