American serama thread!

Your boy is looking good Bill! I love the sheen on him.
I got a couple new birds from Jerry last week. One is small little crele rooster. He was a bit of a wild one, but we bonded last night.

Now he just wants to be with me, but he's still in quarantine, so that makes it kind of hard when I have all the other birds to take care of. I was also sent a really pretty birchen rooster. He's a bit large, but he has good type, and a tail to die for.

I haven't played with him much yet, he also sent a pretty little silver duckwing pullet. When I get a chance to wash them up for a photoshoot, I'll post pictures.

Are you having any better luck with eggs? I was thinking about that, and wondering if you have monitored the temp and humidity in that hatching drawer to make sure there is not some variant there that is causing the eggs to not hatch. The reptile store had a min/max digital thermometer that would tell you the temp variances over a period of time.

What do you mean bill are they pet quality or not ... Does not matter if they are from good line or not ... I get culls from some of the best line and I still call them culls aka pet quality ... So bill post some pics and tell me if they are pet or for show ????

You know, I really dislike the word "cull". It just has a bad sound to it, and seems so derogatory.

These are still sweet beautiful little birds that we're talking about.

Let's not start poking people, OK?

Today the front try has turned into this!

Now for all you serama hatchers out there. My number 1 issues is keeping birds alive! It always seems they poop out on me. They were out side in the brooder and I was loosing 3 a day now they are inside and I have only lost 2 in the last week. I am constantly pulling poop off the butts or flipping chicks. I lost 1 in the water this am. I hear sand helps with poop butt-DID IT! Apple Cider Vin.-DID it! Suggestions please? I keep the heat arouns 85 - 90 and all are comfy.

Very nice redrooster.. and it was great talking to you over the phone the other week ... I see your breeding up a storm . Love the pics keep up the great work ..

I hear you, I am trying to do the same.

But there's nothing wrong with asking a reasonable amount of money for a pet bird. Heck, I would pay $20.00 for a nice layer hen. Or even a mutt rooster for $10 if I needed one. I'd buy a pretty Ameracauna for $30-$40, not to show it, just to have it. I think you see where I'm going with this. Just because its not show quality doesn't make it entirely worthless. Plus if somebody pays $20-$30 bucks for something, they have something invested in the animal, and may be more likely to take care of it, instead of BBQ it.

I've been reasonably lucky with my chicks that hatch. I don't usually have very many at a time, so between me and my daughters, somebody is always keeping an eye on them. I might raise the heat a bit, around 95 for the first week, and 90-95 for the second week. That might also help with pasty. Supposedly sand helps, but then they get the sand in their eyes. I use the Sav A Chick for the first week, and then at intervals after that.

Try putting marbles in the water dish, that way they can't fall in and drown.

I lose a lot of seramas also if they are from pullet hens. I think when the eggs are so small then I chicks are just too small to make it. I think I will wait until their eggs are bigger and try again, it is too depressing losing all the tiny ones. On the poopy rears, I do use play sand in the brooders and I use save a chick in their water and also grind their started in a blender, I do mix grounded up scratch corn in with their starter, it helps a lot. The tiny ones gets poop rears some, but not as often.
