American serama thread!

Whatever you choose, I hope it all works out for you!

My daughter found the perfect match for my Serama! She put a really calm leghorn chick in the box with the serama chick and though the serama seems to try to pick sometimes at it, it just calmly takes it! Thing is, the little one is peeping a lot. I wonder if it's happy or upset, I can't tell? Seems like nothing bad is happening??? Anyway, hope they get along, and all will be well tonight!

There are different speeds of peeping that tell you what is wrong. Rapid high pitched peeping means, hungry/thirsty/cold/hot/ lonely. Do anything change if you pick up and snuggle the wee one?
The slow lower pitched peeps means contentment....hope that helps...:)

Question! I have a silkie hen sitting on serama eggs. They are due next thursday! Getting excited. A lady told me that I would need to take them from the hen since they are so small and since its getting cool.

Is this true? Or would you guys just bring the hen and chicks indoors?

That is a really tough decision to make. I would probably take them from her, and bring them in just to be safe. But...I'm sure there's plenty of people that have had their Silkies raise Seramas successfully, and probably a few that didn't go so well, too. Tricky, tricky.

here is my second baby from my most recent hatch, Asteria. She is 5 days old today and has had a rough start. This one had to be hatched out and her little left foot is curled..It is improving a bit, but not like I'd like for it to. Going to fit her with a chick shoe tomorrow. She is more red than in this photo :D

There once was a little Serama Chick....

Who was so lonely he wished he had friends....

But learned quickly one must be careful of what one wishes for!

"Seriously, you don't need to bow before me!"

LOL, thanks for looking!

That's really interesting Froggiesheins!

I just LOVE Squeekbox and his new friend look cut from behind too!!!

Aww, poor Asteria, but I know you'll fix her up! She'll be great then! Buff is my favorite color

A week to go on eggs from Laura to hatch, i tried giving them to Josie last nite, she settled right in with them, but this afternoon noticed one of the eggs wasn't under her(it was cool to the touch), so popped them all back in the bator- are 6 eggs too many for her??? thought i might give them back closer to hatch? or even after they hatch, she has some nonfertile eggs she is happy with right now

well, i would, i have ours in the spare bathroom where it is nice and warm- i don't think it would be right to seperate them from mama- they know her voice and she talks to them and will encourage them during hatching

Mother Nature is a good mom. Your hen threw out the bad egg. After awhile she will get rid of all the bad eggs. Put the good ones back under her and take out what you know is non fertile. Usually if a hen can't cover all at once she will move them around all the time to keep them all warm. The egg you found out is no good. I have also had hens with chicks during the winter. She will freeze to death before she let's her chicks die. Just give her some good cover a well strawed nest and unless you have extremely cold weather soon Nature will take care of itself.
I have found we Humans kill more chickens trying to help than Mother Nature does.

Wish I had answers for you all, but I don't have enough experience. Let us know what you did and how it went though, OK?

I have 10 good eggs from Laura and 3 unknown/not sure still going in the 'bator. I'm a week behind you :) I need 2 more weeks before they hatch :D

You are undoubtedly correct, Farmergreen!

Hey there! I'll hopefully be a new serama owner on Saturday, picking up my very first pair!
But i was wondering if anyone has any information about how their color from generation to generation works? I know they don't breed true to color, but I'm not sure what that includes.i don't yet know what I'm getting, but i haven't seen much information on their colors around.
