I had been told that USPS would quit shipping when it hit a certain temp. Is that not so? At any rate, I'd much prefer to pick out the birds I want in person, and I'm sure I can get lots of ideas about how to set up for breeding, etc.

I'm hoping to learn to build cages myself, and then build them with the metal trays that pull out for easy cleaning.

Oh yes! He will teach you a lot about keeping them and raising them and training them and breeding them and showing them......go empty headed! Since we are in Florida he raises them outside unless a huricane is headed in or it gets REALLY cold then they go in a structure till the danger passes.

Shesh my birds are fat then

My 'best' guy got bullied by another cockerel in the pen, so I moved him in with the pigeons. This means that he has a never-ending supply of wild bird seed along with his usual food...I'm hoping he doesn't chunk-out on me since he is the best one I've got IMO

So far he and his little pullet haven't 'cleaned up' the seeds, so I don't think they are eating too much

I know Romeo my BEST roo out of my two is over 17 oz

and he's a White cockerel. Juliett is a white pullet and she's about 14 oz. Bell AOC is around 13 and Chiquita AOC is under 9 oz

I give them just their chicken food but the family gives them mealworms, beemoths, bird seed and everything they can get their grubby little beaks on!

If he is a cock (over 1 year) he's fine at 17 ounces. The cut-off for cocks is 19.2 ounces.

ETA: Most of the cocks at shows I've been to have been around 17 ounces.

Pullets should be between 9.6 and 14.4 (ideally 12 ounces); Hens and Cockerels between 11.2 and 16.8 (ideally 14 ounces); Cocks between 12.8 and 19.2 (ideally 16 ounces).

Thats why I have spoiled and fat birds

except for my little mottled pullet Chiquita of course. I don't have the fancy gram scales or anything I just use a little plastic spring loaded kitchen scale. My oldest hen that I bought from Mr. Clampitt is around 12oz but she hasn't molted yet. So as of right now the ones I'm taking to the CRs are:
Romeo(White Cockerel): around 17 oz
Juliett(White Pullet): around 14 oz
Bell (AOC Pullet): around 13 oz
Chiquita (AOC Pullet): around 9 or just under

I guess I just got lucky with Chiquita my smallest now if I could just get her to pose by herself. If she's by another bird watch out LOL Same with the other 3
