American serama thread!

I am learning a lot about incubation right now with my first chicks in the bator. Hatching Mille fleur Cochins (hopefully) and once I learn everything I can maybe order hatching serama eggs. That's my wish. I just don't want to invest anything until I know what I am doing!

I already learned don't toss an egg unless it is

1. Not developing from the get go

And

2. Begins to stink!!!!

I tossed an egg I think was viable. Oops, I saw a blood ring but maybe I was wrong? And I almost had an egg explode! Gross! But I went through with pencil and put a ? On eggs I was unsure if they were alive. I was pretty confident they were dead because the veins looked like they were decaying and/or stringy but a few days later (this morning) I looked at them and I think they are viable. What if I had tossed them??! If there is even a remote chance of hatching I need to leave them in the bator. I saw something definitely wiggling around and it wasn't vibrations from my hand.

Now to wait another 10 days... Agh!

Need to wait at least 8 days to be sure before tossing them. Also when it's time for lockdown don't assume an egg is dead just because you don't see movement. Wait about 3 days past hatching time to be sure.

I'm trying to find a good bantam to use for showmanship at the fair. I'm wondering if seramas are easy to handle and train and fairly quiet?

Seramas are an excellent bantam choice for children to take the the fair, they are naturally tame, and easy to work with.!!! I just donated 6 to a local 4h group that was starting their chicken unit and needes some showmanship birds. Good luck, and enjoy your serama they are wonderful little personalities in a chicken suit!!

Hi everyone,
I have been busy caring for my DH........He is improving but needs 24/7
care at this time......
I have eggs in the bator..........went to put them in lockdown last night and felt a crack.
I thought for sure it was something I had done.on closer inspection, it is a pip.
Now I am worried I shrink wrapped the little thing.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
It was day 18......
These eggs are from dippsy doodle and a few of my own.

The incubator is peeping like crazy at me.so chicks should be coming soon.
I have sold the majority of my LG breeding stock. It is hard when you have put so much time, love and hope into them but
I have been blessed to let them go to homes that appreciate them.
I love this thread........sure gives me a nice place to rest my mind......

If anyone has thoughts about the mishap with the egg that had pipped early
I would appreciate feedback.at this point I am just watching, but maybe should take the chance to open the egg a little?????
Later, Toni

Toni that has happened to me on several occasions!!! And they all pipped out fine. Don't panic!

I am having some bad luck. A friend is shipping me some a pair of silkie seramas about 3 months old and then two that are 1 month old. He went to the Post Office yesterday and they said that it was cool enough to ship because of all the rain and that they would be here today. Well come to find out they wont be here tomarrow becuase I live so rural. If we would have know this we would have never shipped them. I am not to worried about the weather, but I am worried that an going to die of dehydration They do have scratch and chick mash in the box. Any ideas or experiences?

Good thinking larkspur! My very scientific method [hee hee] is to candle at 7days then candle at 14 days to see if there is growth....then candle at about 17/18 to see if there is more growth still....then WAIT

I was told that the California serama thread got closed down last night. We need to be extra vigilant about this thread! Only positive comments. We need to Police our own thread. I think alot of us would die if this thread got closed, so let be proactive. All you guys rock and i need this thread to survive my mundan day with children under 4!

They often do take 2 days....especially if you're rural. I always worrry about mine, too, but they have always made it. I always put pieces of cut apple in the box (and train them to learn what apples are days before I ship). People receiving my birds have told me that they ate everything but the apple skins. I worry more about heat than anything (of course its hot here). I don't ship from mid June until September. I ship as late in the day as possible (so they can sleep the first night...Sometimes they make it overnight and that is great.. If not, then they usually get to your post office very early (like 5:00 a.m.) on that second morning. I wait until the birds are physically and emotionally mature...at least 4 months. Your birds will probably be all right, but pretty scared and thirsty. Good luck, let us know.
