American serama thread!

Just wondering about burr oak acorns...I have a tree that produces tons of acorns, the ones that are the size of regular chicken eggs...would they make good food for the chickens if i crushed them up and addd it a free choice? Any input would be appreciated.

I guess so if you process it. Check out this site:

What do you all feed your Seramas? I have read that gamebird feed is best?

Mine are still chicks and are still eating chick mash. But I need to find a way to purchase feed at a cheaper price. I live in the city, and I think I'd have to go to Bakersfield, 90 miles, before finding a place that sells at discount in quantity......... have no idea where to go. It's getting expensive!

I know nothing about gamebird feed? But, I feed Southern States medicated crumbles to the chicks, and Southern States Layer Crumbles to the adults. A good bit of cracked corn in these winter months, too.

IF you feed gamebird feed you HAVE to grind it up into smaller pieces otherwise they can choke on those large pieces. Everyone has their own preference as to what to feed and in the USA the brand we use here might not be available by you. SO>>>you want to feed a higher protien feed, 16-18% , [crumbles] . I have no experience feeding gamebird feed exclusivley..so I can't say yeah or nay on it.
My gremlins get free choice layer crumbles, fresh fruits&vegies [from the bruised bin] and scratch [1/3 wheat 1/3/ corn 1/3 milo] in the evening for a treat. I also pull clover and other assorted weeds that they will eat...CHEEP FEED! :p
I hope that helps.......

Well, I did end up candling a few of my eggs and I saw nothing in there :( But the first day the incubator was running really cool, took a long time to get up to speed. I hope that didn't kill them! By the second day I got it running above 98.5. I didn't want to over heat them this time, thinking that was the problem last time (too many time I caught it up at 101 and almost 102 (like 101.7). So today should be 3 full days at 12:30ish so maybe it's just too soon to see anything? Gosh I hope so!

IT was supposed to be for the NYD hatch but that will have to wait. I did put two back in that don't look like they have any damage or weeping and the air sacs seem to have stopped moving. I have one more that the sac is still moving around inside, can I put an egg with a moving air sac in the bator? Or do I need to leave it out pointy end down until it stops moving? For the new eggs next week too?

She said she would be adding a heat pad for the replacement shipment. She has never sent eggs to my location before so this is a learning curve all around. Who would have expected it to freeze here the last two days anyhow! Crazies.

Put it in the bator but do not turn it for the first few days. That will help the aircell to settle even more and help the embryo get stronger. Make sure the egg is kept in an upright position the entire time (egg carton with bottom cut out for airflow.)
