American serama thread!

You seem pretty sure Selene is a little girl?
Do you have a guess on Tinsel? I so hope for a hen! My little boy has a red comb already and it bigger then Tinsel's. She is over 3 weeks old. Not quite 4 weeks yet.

Tinsel looks like a little pullet to me. All of mine have at least had pink combs and little wattles starting if they were boys at that age. I'd bet on her being a cute little girl :D

Alrighty - so I kept four eggs from my botched frozen shipment. I have never hatched eggs before, and I really have no idea what I'm looking for when I check them. One seems to have some veining but it looks like its right up against one side. Is that normal?

Another egg looks almost completely dark, can't see a thing through it.
The other two look clearish. Im not sure when to toss them or how to know what's going on! help?

Here is a site that shows what a regular chicken egg looks like during candling. Yes, Serama eggs are tinier but you should see the same things going on.

Thanks! Hopefully this will help!

Yes, at around 7-ish days you will start to see veins and a tiny black spot up against the side. I, too, have some eggs I can't see into; they are EEs and the shells look extremely thick. I usually keep my eggs til around day twelve. That way, you are absolutely sure nothing is happening, because I've seen embryos develop as late as day ten. Also, my serama eggs all went to day 21. Didn't even begin to pip at day 18-19. I'm glad I waited until day 21 before "helping", but I didn't really need to help. He pipped, then zipped all on day 21 and the little bugger is as healthy as a horse.
I'm just not sure when to start tossing. It'll be twelve days tomorrow. How long should I keep them before I give up on those with no veins?

I had resigned myself to having a solid black cockerel, and then one day I just saw the tiniest glimmer of copper showing. I was soo excited, and yes the hackle feathers were well along before the saddle feathers started growing in. I considered it a blessing, because I had been wanting a black copper marans roo( they are so beautiful), and got one, just in miniature, so even better.

This is exacly what happened to my black cockrel. One day he's all black then the next he has copper flakes one his hackels. I have a quick question what is the differnts between american seramas and malaysian seramas?

Ok quick question... I just got chick number 2 out and noticed it has feathered legs. So I am wondering if booted chicks are silkies or if silkied birds have feathered legs at all? I know smooth have feathered legs but just curious since I am holding out hope it is a silkie.

Yes, I bought some eggs from a breeder in MI and so far chick #2 is very fuzzy but the legs are feathered and I was curious if anyone has info on the booted type? I have never had chicks from Seramas and not sure if the silkie feathered have feathered legs or if a silkie can be just fuzzy or if they do have feathered legs? Thanks!
