American serama thread!

My serama roo use to live outside. He did lose his prongs and half his toe tips due to frostbite when he was a chick well a younger cockerel. He could still walk etc. until a dog killed him in november.
I'm so sorry to hear that ! It's sad Shen you loose one! I had 4 killed in July by a pit. I still miss my head hen

Please read! I had my youngest Serama pair in a collapse able dog crate temporarily. I was feeding and heard loud chirping. Luckily I checked on them. I found them smashed up against the screen of the cage after is collapsed. Luckily that was where they were pushed up against or else they may not have been able to breathe. Everyone came out safe and sound, just a little scared. So please DO NOT use one of those dog crates.
I would hate to see it happen to someone else's bird and the birds not be so lucky.
Thank you! I will definitely keep the kennel away! Hope they are good now.

I keep my seramas outside. They seem to do fine. But, then again I live in California and we have mild winters. I keep them outside because my house is to small to accommodate them. I suppose I could keep them in the garage, but it has almost no ventilation. They do fine outside. I check combs everyday and apply aquafor as needed

Do you bring th in if it hits the 30's? I live in California to. It's nice to hear what different people do. I noticed after 2/3 days out my cockerel got the pox. He's better now

How many of you keep your seramas inside the house or garage? How many of you keep them outside?
What's your reasoning for either or?
I'm scared to let mine sleep outside but they are out during the day. Boy are they excited to see me when the sun is setting. I had them in a smaller bird cage. It's time to upgrade any body recommend a good inside hutch or small coop? She's starting to spend more time of the roost and down on the bottom. Her face is red and her pelvic bone are 1 1/2 fingers. My big girls lay at 2-3 fingers. She has to be close to laying!! Thanks again !

I keep mine in a heated garage room. I do not think they'd survive Wisconsin winters (weeks at a time well below 0 degrees F) When I did put them outside one pullet was lost to mink and the rest got mites. Many farm stores have rabbit/small animal cages at a low price. All wire, many sizes-with a little modification they work well with birds.

where did you find such small diapers? That's been most of my problem. Following them around. Love the coop!

You can take a sock and then cut holes for the legs, wings, head, and Tail. I have size 10 feet and I cut one and then It fit my size A serama so You can use any size sock so you can have different socks for different size socks

Yes if it gets into the 30s I make them a temporary place to stay for awhile. I'm working on making some pens in my shed with heat lamps to keep them in for a few days when it gets super cold. Other than that they do just fine.

Thanks! I made her diaper from scrap leather I had & some velcro. If you want diapers but don't want to make them, @kukupecpec makes them so cute!

I'll toss in my 2cents to this. I live in southern CA and my seramas live outside BUT in the winter (yes rest of the country laugh) I put plastic on one side of their run so there is no cold breeze AND their coop is insulated. When the temps go below 40 I use purple reptile bulbs to give them a little warm and that works well. I do have 2 micros that come in the house every night and sleep next to me in a box and entertain me at night <3
