I just put 12 Serama hens under some broody bantam Cochin hens. Is using a hen better than an incubator when hatching Serama eggs? I'm doing this because our hatch rate in the incubator is not that great at the moment.

Good question. I'm doing the same thing. Should I separate the mom and babies when they hatch or keep them all together? I have another serama roo and pullet in the cage.

Hello, I am new to Serama's but really have fallen in love with the. I have several chicks I have hatched out. At what point do the start getting their colors (right now they are pretty plane). Also, at what age can you start to determine if they are male or femail. Thanks in advance for all your help.

I'm going to separate the Seramas from the moms but I have Phoenix eggs that they are also sitting on that they can keep. They are just to small to keep with a regular chicken, even if it is a bantam. But if she's gentle with them, you should be fine. Although I would separate the broody hen from the rest of the chickens.

Usually if mommy hens are hatching their eggs they'll become broody and should do good raising their chicks. Just make sure she's protected from any potential bad weather. Seramas generally aren't aggressive towards eachother and my hen hatched out and raised 8 chicks along with the rooster who watched over anyone. My seramas began showing color around a month or two but honestly depends on their genetic background. You can usually tell the gender as soon as 1 month

And hens do a great job of hatching their chicks. Thats how all chickens have been doing it for as long as anyone can remember
