It has been awhile since I have posted anything but three of my hens all started setting at the same time and ended up hatching 16 out of 25 eggs.

They all hatched within three days of each other, so it caused major chaos in the coop....the hens are constantly fighting over the chicks. My question is...would it be better now after two weeks to remove two of the hens and just let one finish raising the chicks? I am down to 11 chicks for various reasons and I want the hens to start laying again asap. My flock will be NPIP certified in another week and I want to start selling some birds.

Hey, you could be right! It's funny because I never thought about the possibility of him being inbred. Could very well be possible. Sometimes it takes an outsiders perspective! Now that you mention it, I do have a frizzled pullet from him (I've been trying different hens with him) that has two different colored eyes, two different colored legs, and has half frizzled and half smooth feathered chest. She's definitely unique. Most of the young ones by this rooster are completely normal but he does throw out his share of weirdos.

He doesn't sound like a cock that I would be using in any breeding program but he might make a wonderful pet. I'd consider obtaining another male if you want to continue breeding.

I have tried incubator and broody.The eggs just aren't fertile to start with.My roo is a year old. Thanks for the offer of a another roo but I'll pass. Daryl ( we think a Jap x serama )will be a good out-cross and should produce lovely little 3/4 mutts.

It was hard to make the call to pull his hens from him but I did about three weeks ago. I'm going to give one of his normal looking sons a chance to fix those problems. Hard call to make when he has such awesome type! One thing for sure is I'll never be lacking in roosters. Looking at him you'd never know that he makes hen feathered roosters. Maybe his son will have better luck!

The hens can be pretty competitive. I've had shared hatches and the hens went nuts, had to give them their own space with their own babies so that they wouldn't fight. Then I've had shared hatches where both of the moms were great together. If your hens are going crazy and acting competitive, I'd do what I could for the safety of the chickies.
