American serama thread!

For those that have Tribbles, at what age can sex be determined accurately? Mine are now close to 8 weeks old. The comb on one is a bit larger, but not enough to say conclusively that it is a rooster. If it were of my own stock I would say pullet.

I certainly am having no luck in getting replies.

Has anyone had any luck getting micro serama to breed? I've a young pullet that I'm quite sure will be a micro when she matures.

I don't know about micro-Seramas but my first three, (two cockrels and one pullet) are about two and a half months old. They started showing sex characteristics by four to six weeks old...right now both boys are crowing and in the last couple days the black and white cockrel has been grabbing the pullet...she puts up a fuss. Don't blame her. I've got a set of cages for them...but most cages are meant for perching birds...so they have cage bars over the floor above the removable tray...I'm going to modify them...so the birds can spend time scratching around on the floor of the cage. I would have built my own, but I couldn't beat the price.

My pullet is just a bit past two months. They started showing sex characteristics by four to six weeks old...right now both boys are crowing and in the last couple days the black and white cockrel has been grabbing the pullet...she puts up a fuss. Mine has been developing normally; just way smaller than any others I have raised. Don't blame her. Good luck with yours and thanks for the reply.

I have a pair that are about 10 ounces each, they have had great fertility rates. I think if you pair her with a rooster similar in size you should be alright.

Thank you for your response. If the pullet follows has a similar growth pattern to the rest of the serama chicks I have raised she (Dinky) will mature around 8 ounces. I hope for a bit more than that, but... Your post gives me hope. I want smaller serama, but in more of a gradual manner as I think this would increase the chance of good fertility. Dinky's size change is abrupt; half the size of other chicks of the same or similar age.

Thanks! Me too...and they keep changing! I thought the 2 white ones were going to stay solid white, but now at 9 weeks old, I'm noticing some colored feathers coming in. And that black rooster just keeps getting more read in his hackles. I guess I expected it in the males, just not so much in the females.
