American serama thread!

Rachel has great birds and is awesome! Unfortunately I only see her at shows but she has wonderful birds and is the nicest person ever! Congratulations on your new seramas and serama ownership!

Here are my two new babies! I'm so excited! We don't have names for them yet, ideas? (Our 6 other big back yard ladies are all named after fast food chicken joints - the boys idea haha - Kentucky, Churches, Fillet, Feliz, Loco, Enchilada)










I hope to get some better pictures in the daylight tomorrow!


I wanted to ask you guys about my girl's toenails - are they supposed to look like this? I am new both to chickens and seramas. My outside girls wear theirs down nicely free ranging, but I think these two are going to be mostly inside so I wondered if I should trim her nails? I am a vet assistant (still in school for vet tech) so I can get my hands on good clippers and help =)

you can see the middle nail on the R foot here seems super long and the side toesies are all curly

here is my second baby from my most recent hatch, Asteria. She is 5 days old today and has had a rough start. This one had to be hatched out and her little left foot is curled..It is improving a bit, but not like I'd like for it to. Going to fit her with a chick shoe tomorrow. She is more red than in this photo

i have seem chick orthopedics where you can straighten those feet now - cant find the thread but searching chicken orthopedics it may come up- it does work my little Gimpy is waling coreectly now

9 week old BoogeyMan is next... this guy is a little fruitloop to try to stand on a table. I'm lucky I got pics of him at all He really can stand and pose pretty in his cage!




Then there is Fabio. Poor guys comb is really dry right now...I need to oil it and get some humidity into my serama room. But this guy will be the one who teaches me to show Seramas..I toss him on the table and this is what he does! He is 9 months old, so still a youngster

Congratulations on your new darlings! They are cuties and luck to have you to take care of them! AAs far as names sometimes it takes awhile of handling them and a name will pop in your head because of something they do, or the way they act. LOL

OH MY, they are WAAY too long! Because of their extreme length you will have to work on getting the "quick" to retract. When you clip whittle them back [ one one session] until you see a spot of blood at the end. Stop there, wait a few weeks and take a tiny bit off till you see that spot of blood again. Repeat untill the nails are the length they should be, which is just touching the floor. The side toes curl like that beacuse of their extreme length. Hope that helps.

Kukupec, her toe nails need trimmed. I was sooo busy I did not get them trimmed for you. Remember birds need their toe nails and beaks trimmed occasionally. You have lots of fun with your new little ones.

So far all they have done is poop LOL not sure I want that in their names ha

I am familiar with "quicking" in dogs for nail trimming. With them, if you trim the nail so it has a flat surface which is basically straight up and down, and then trim the upper half further back at a 45 degree angle, it helps the quick retract even better. Is there anything like this for chickens? Or should I just trim her back with straight cuts? Oh! And can I file the edges so they aren't too sharp? She's still a little skittish so I don't want her scratching the heck of anyone or her mate.



Oh the joy of new pets! This is my first rooster of any kind, so when his internal clock went off at 5am, boy was that interesting. They are living in my room so that loud little crow was LOUD
anyone else have completely indoor seramas? What do you do about the crow? My husbands wants me just to make a really thick quilted type cage cover that will muffle him, but I'm afraid they'll roast in there if its thick enough to muffle him.

My roo, Golding hardly ever crows and it is sooo quiet compared to my brahmas, silkies, and cochins. It sounds like a squeek, as mentioned earlier, a dog squeek toy. for names how about Aldwin, Dawson, Denzel (all midevil names I was finding in picking out my tweeties names) for the roo. For the lil girl, Arabella, Lilli, Marigold, Luella, Cinder,Tranquility, . . . for just a few.
