Just give them time. They will come out on their own. It doesn't get cold enough in Tucson for you to worry about the birds as long as they are out of the wind and have a cozy place at night. Put up some sorta have side cover on the bottom half of the cage to keep the shavings inside. The boys always love to strut and flap. Have fun!

This is the only chick that hatched this week. I've been trying to breed wheaten, and this is what I get. The hens are lucky I don't know which one is responsible for this! Look me up next spring if you are working on a BBR pen.

What is BBR? Can't tell what your little cutie is? I take it he's not wheaten? LOL Very cute though!

Oh, found it in abbreviations. Wouldn't that be a type of wheaten though?

It's really hard to tell the male black breasted reds from the male wheatens, but the females are very different. A wheaten chick would hatch yellow or white, not all dark and stripey. I think it may have come from my white hen, who is now in a white pen. I won't have that to worry about in the future.

kukupecpec, If you want the hen to lay in the same spot all the time, I'd build her a nest If you can give them lots of room, that'd be best especially if they're inside all the time. Also, I used the DLM in my brooder, in the house for 8 weeks, there were 5 birds in there. Except when one of them pooped a fresh stinker, the litter didn't smell. It was deep though, over 5 inches. If I smelled anything (toward the end, when they really out-grew the brooder, but were still stuck in there) I took the scooper and turned it then added a fresh layer on top. The only spot I had trouble with was where the waterer was. They kept spilling it, but I've got to say, that end was incredibly warm! Now I believe, if you live in a cold winter area, the DLM will give your birds lots of warmth! In fact, I didn't start over, I took the bedding to the new coop and just added to it

Tripp16, how long were they out before you discovered them? Even if they got cool, they could still be alive. It's certainly worth a try! Oh, artsyrobin already said so! .... Oh, 30 minutes, that's nothing! Hens get off for an hour or so all the time. Is she really no longer broody? I'm sure the eggs will be fine, just go ahead and incubate them

Oh yeah. Just up and done! She is a great mother! She has chicks when I bought her! I dont know what clicked off but she hasnt even looked at the nest all day and is acting completely normal. I have the eggs in the bator. fingers crossed.

Love that name, Chinadoll, smoothmule! So pretty. You might want to collect a few eggs and store them before setting them so they all hatch at the same time?

No peeps or movement in the incubator this morning. They were all 3 kicking and moving inside their eggs last night. Its only day 20 so tomorrow is the big day!

OHHH The Excitement!!!

I miss that feeling...so, I think I'm gonna order some Silkie eggs and do a hatch/grow out over the winter. YAY for You. Good Luck!
