American soldiers, seeking refugee status in Canada

so you have talked to my husband personally? or how else do you feel qualified judging him? He never glorified anything. I would appreciate not judging them all by what a few have done.

No disrespect to your husband but his job is to recruit for his branch over other branches. I have talked to recruiters in various branches and I have talked to my family about recruiters before because they have been in the military. The recruiter will not talk about the bad that much. They will discuss negatives but won't go into details. They will go into a lot of details about positives. I wasn't judging your husband.

So how much time would someone get if they decided to leave mid contract?

Really trying to figure out, how our Canadian government is not kicking these soliders "butts" back across the bridge. (It still may happen, just a slower pace then I think it should be)

My husband actually talked a highschooler out of going AD. This kid went on to become Tim Tebow's room mate in college. His name is Toni Joyner. He always had good coomunications with the other service recruiters and they would refer applicants to other branches if they felt that it was in the interest of the future soldier. To this day and after leaving recruiting he still has contact to some of his soldiers that he put in ten years ago. BTW he left recruiting after they wanted him one of the good ole boys and he refused.

MeatKing different things can happen. THey can end up in Leavenworth, get a dishonorable discharge or nothing happens to them at all. The guy my step daughter went reserves and didnt show up for a single drill. They just dropped him from the payroll , now they just take his tax return until he repays a certain amnount of money. McDonalds will happily employ "people" like this as managers.

We had people go AWOL from boot camp. They realized they did not want to be there after a couple days.

And they weren't drafted.

I had friends in the military, there where some stories of people like that who went AWOL during boot camp, but they where really stupid, or just acted it because there was a certain time, just before boot camp and just before it ended the recruits could leave the military, without too much trouble, because the military has realized if you don't give them an opt out it's more trouble than it's worth for them if they don't release them out of their contracts before they actually start their tour of duty. I can't remember the terms they used for the types of termination of their military contract in either case but I know they have the option to get out but you must do it at the time the military says otherwise you are considered awol and your in deep trouble....

I don't think these people could be classed as political refugees. Whatever trouble going AWOL brings to them they should face the consequences. Maybe the army could sue them for breach of contract? I do think that a lot of young men, who haven't achieved much at school, see the army as a good career choice, particularly in areas of high unemployment. The knock on effect of this is that the cumulative IQ of some armies is decidedly low. Not a good place for any country to be. I think this is why we get these awful blue on blue incidents, and the torture of captives. Big, in this case is not best. better by far to have an intelligent army of well trained soldiers who want to be there, than a massive army of reluctant recruits far less well trained.

You can be released "for the good of the service" if they think you'll be to much trouble.

not what i was referring to sir,as I stated they had a "get out of jail free card" of some sort if you where smart enough to ask for it at the right times, the pre-boot camp one was a free pass, but the tail end of the boot camp one had some sort of hitch to it, but it was still effective to help out those who realized they made a mistake of joining up, it wasn't a "don't call us we'll call you" discharge, like you are referring to, it is a different discharge....

Well they also have one that they give in or at the end of boot camp that makes it like you never signed up and were never there. I don't remember what it was called though.
