I just wanted to pop on here real quick.

Sparked my mind when you said Iditarod.Did you know, a Group of Poodles ran the Iditarod 4 times and finished each time?
I think I heard that as an off-handed comment once, but I've never really thought about it. That's pretty cool, although I personally wouldn't want to race a team of poodles.

Im so glad you work with your dogs so much.
Sibes are pretty and the breed is a fast breed, for a spitz.
Although the Alaskan is based from the Sibe they are indeed bred for more speed.
I had totally forgotten bout some teams doing the "Rod" and the "Quest" back to back.
And in reality the original Sibe was more or less an Alaskan anyhow. A "pariah" sort of dog.
I wonder if there any pure strains of them old Siberian dogs left over there eh????
It'd sure be great to bring in some fresh blood of the originals back here.
I'd add it to the Anydors and Seppallas and still have "original blood.

Anyways... Mush on Blue.
The Sibes were nice dogs, but two were pretty stubborn. We each took a team of two out on scooters, came back, got fresh dogs and went out again. She had one I was fond of. A nice looking male with a smooth gate and easy temper. This was his first run (she is fostering him currently) but I think if she ends up keeping him (heck I might even see about taking him) He'll turn out really well. He kept his line pretty tight while he was running and for never having done it before, he did very well. We'll head out to a new trail this Thursday with teams of two again. Possibly three. We can run very large teams on the scooters and the cart is smaller so it can't take that many dogs. It looks like it will snow all weekend! I might call up my mentor and she what's she's up to. If she gets a lot of snow, I'll see about meeting up with her.

I love Seppallas. I think their my favorite out of all the dog's I've worked with. Sadly, the breed is getting harder and harder to find. I think most people are turning to Alaskans and Sibes and other dogs. Not that those aren't good dogs, but I really do love Seppallas and the history that goes with them. Beautiful animals in my opinion.

Have a good night every one!

Yes
I've read about it too.
However I didn't know they entered and finished 4x.
I read that the feet were good, appetite & stomach was good, stamina and speed were good.
The problem with poodles is the coat doesn't keep them warm properly and snow and frost froze right into it
Actually causing the dogs to freeze to their beds.
No insulation. Or more rather not enough of the right kind.
But ya eh.... Poodles running the Iditarod! Who'd'a'thunk it?

You bring up a lot of good points and thanks for your insight too :)

I hadn't really thought of it like that but you are right - dogs die every day anyway so why not doing something they love? I mean, obviously like you said, having them be in good health and/or live is the goal but if they do, at least they did it running.

And yes, in India cows are sacred, right? I found this interesting book and ordered it several months ago but never read it
1f602.png
but anyway, it was all about what makes one animal food versus a cute pet, etc. In different parts of the world and how here dogs and cats are "cute" and untouchable and cows and that we cant think of as anything but food yet in other places cows are sacred and dogs are food and what's the difference, etc. Idk, it sounded really interesting but i dont read or do anything anymore thanks to this dang phone

That is sad but life i suppose

Very true, never realized it was wolf/natural physique. Yes, pugs, bulldogs, etc., probably can't run lol but then again, some of them want to. I think it's cruel to breed them with such short noses. In fact, the original used to have longer noses and they have gotten shorter and shorter. There is actuallt a breeder in Germany I think it is trying to bring back the original pug. It's fascinating. A little bit longer nose, longer legs, and I think a less curled tail because supposedly the curled tail can cause back problems. I think it's fantastic. And guess what? They're still just as cute. I mean really, there is no need for the cruel muzzle. They can't even breathe properly in summer or exercise and idk if it's all small dog breeds or just some but they can't birth naturally which is absolutely ridiculous to me. Looking at a picture of a pug skull next to a wolf or dog skull is even more depressing too.

Sorry, I guess I got off on a bit of a rant too LOL

Anyway, yes, lots and lots of conditioning would indeed be needed
I didn't think you said anything wrong! And I think my intentions didn't come out the clearest either, I was simply trying to be nice/for lack of better word make you feel better about saying the wrong species and was saying even though you did that it was okay because i still understand what you meant. I think it came off like i was upset or something but far from it! Tone doesn't tend to translate well over the internet haha

Yes. If I had a choice on how/where/when I would like to die,....... a beautiful clear day in the middle of of winter liesurely mushing with my favorite team of 6,7,8 K9's through a beutiful part of the boreal forest I love with the cold air in my lungs and a bit a burn in my legs from running just because I want to run(not because I have to).
If any one ever tries to tell me a dog don't like running they obviously don't know healthy dogs because even Pug with lo his human engineered deformities loves to run. Now indeed hyper little Chihuahua. Even more so Husky.
I totally like your analogy of "Tone doesn't tend to translate well over the internet."
I'm having a god little chuckle here.

LOL "stubborn"
Ya, I suppose it could be translated as "stubborn". Could be learned behaviour, or "sour thinking" which I see in in apatment/house pet(my opinion"abused")Husky. These dogs are highly intelligent and need to be "free" a lot. Being cooped-up on short leads and/or small kennels or worse yet in a house or apartment or even worse a basement or a bedroom and worse yet "crated" will "sour" them. Coop me up and see what crap I can deliver you either directly or as mind games.
More to come after lunch break in the office.

But quickly before I go.... Yes, I love Sepps too. That'd be an awesome team to work with. Throw in some ?Anydor? and maybe even a few more fresh lines of the originals from the Siberian landscape......oooooooooooooooo

But still my fave would have been the oldtime Indian dogs from my neck of the woods.
Point in question...the movie "Iron Will". The 2 guys in 2nd and 3rd place on the movie,.... in real life they were the ones that got 1st and 2nd with their Manitoba trapline dogs that were actually the old time dogs from here.
But they weren't as pretty as Sibes
.....and besides they were considered by the Cdn government's agents as "to be eradicated".....

That nice looking male.... Sometimes we are lucky to get a"true"worker. I keep thinking about Baby. I've talked about her on here before.
I would love to get a "true" male to put into one of Baby's grandotrs. Pipoon(Baby's only surviving female pup) is too old now. Another helping may kill her.
Now indeed A breeding pair of Seppallas eh. Oooooooooo:love:th
The Seppalla kennel here in Manitoba is selling out. Him and his wife are getting old now. I think you can Google it.
Wait. I be right back. Go a go look now.

I'd given the dogs a month break cause it looked like I was burning them out and we're back to square one :/ maybe they just aren't cut out for the roles they have to play in the team?

Aw. That sucks eh
But if I recall correctly I have used a word often regarding training dogs.
Perseverance
If I may be so bold, I think you gave you a break. These dogs have too much energy for us.:D
Back at'er baby.........:D:D
You'll do fine
They'll forgive you:):)

I hope you get snow. I'd be happy for you and your dogs.
We here are back to sloppy gutter and no snow. Even the little bit of frost has come out of the ground.
Geez! I had just finished moving the dogs again. :he:barnie
