Haha the first name that came to mind was Squirt! Such a cute little squirt! My teacher has a D’Anver chick and I get to have her if I want! Hope is a girl! Any name suggestions
I had an Ameraucana pullet who did the same with newly hatched chicks three weeks younger than her. D’Anvers are kinda medium, based on comb development. But if you get the quail variety you can sex them very early because of the gold shoulders on cockerels vs patterned shoulders on pullets. Just like all breeds that I know of there isn’t a difference in feathering speed between the sexes unless bred for though. My little d’Anver babies are 2 weeks old today! They are feathering out the same so I’m guessing it’s two of the same gender…but I’m never sure! They are both very sweet and will sit with me while I watch TV and get so relaxed it’s adorableThey’re super sweet and I worried about their size with the other babies, because I also have a 3 week old Lav Orpington and BLRW and they look ginormous next to these little ones! But instead, the Lav Orpington has become a mother like figure and all the tiny bantams snuggle under it at bedtime
It’s super cute! Hoping it means the Orp in a girl, but with my luck, probably not!
How early do d’Anvers show signs of gender? Are they early like d’Uccles? Or slow like Ameraucanas?
Yeah, I need to learn to choose easy to sex breeds! I’m always drawn to the varieties that are the most difficultI had an Ameraucana pullet who did the same with newly hatched chicks three weeks younger than her. Yeah that would definitely take the edge off my impatienceI find nothing difficult about waiting… but that could be because I hatch more than 100 chicks a year.
Maybe we should swap. The ducks don’t like water…Tip: don’t give your hatchlings a waterer with a see-through jug part. My brilliant day old d’Anvers chicks have become ducks and wade through the water to peck at the water they see in the jug part.
