We all could learn from the Amish.

I lived amongst them back in the summer of '76.

How wonderful it would be to be able to return to simpler times.

We are all headed there unless our Government curbs its spending... and soon.

We have alot of Amish where I live. I love it when my neices and nephews come out to visit, when they see the Amish in their horse and buggies they just think it is too awsome, they sell the most beautiful baskets, and quilts around here as well as produce, canned items, blacksmith service ect. My best friends grandpa used do alot of trading with them when he was alive the children would always come running out of the fields when he came because he always brung em' candies. I could easily be Amish if they had air conditioning

We have many Amish families around here too. We're also just north of Lancaster Co., PA which is a very concentrated Amish area. They make great neighbors and you can't beat the quality of any goods they make to sell or services they offer.

We have a lot of Amish families in our area, we buy our hay from an Amish farm. I love to sit outside and hear the clip-clopping of the horses hooves coming down the road! The farm up the road had a big get together not too long ago and there were buggies everywhere, their fields were full, the road was lines with them all waiting to turn into the field and get a parking spot. Our grocery stores have special parking for the Amish, some of them covered shelter for the horses while the people shop. I love to drive by the farms in the spring when they have the work horses hooked up and they are plowing! The cutest thing I had ever seen was an old man driving his plow team in the field and on the back of this big giant percheron draft horse was this tiny, maybe 5 year old, boy in his bare feet! I wish I had my camera that day, I would have loved to have that framed!
A couple of weeks ago, if was FREEZING out and raining. I saw a buggie coming down the road and thought man, that poor horse wet and cold.THEN I saw the poor guy driving it! He had a wagon type buggie with no roof or sides. The poor guy was all bundled up getting poured on in the freezing rain!

Sometimes it seems like life would be easier in some ways!

Not really. They worry about all the same stuff you worry about, with the additional worry of "will it be a good harvest this year?" That's a BIG worry! Also, having a tight-knit community is a lot of worries in and of itself, because you're always worrying about what other people think and feel. The only bit that is slightly less worrisome is that you have to do hard physical labor for about 12-14 hours/day, so during the day you're too focused on working to worry a WHOLE lot, and at night you're too exhausted to lose sleep. I guess you don't worry about retirement, on account of never retiring...

I know lots of people like to romanticize the Amish, but after seeing what my Mennonite and Amish relatives deal with their whole lives, I definitely prefer modern life.
