amish neighbor sells feed, would that be ok to feed chickens?

Hi, all,
Our Amish neighbor grows and sells feed. We were wondering if anyone knows anything about this? Would it be ok to feed that to our chickens as opposed to the store bought stuff with all the ingredients? they feed their chickens their own homegrown feed..I'll have to find out what they put in it...we are going to start them out on starter from Tractor Supply first, of course, but we were wondering if this would suffice for their layer feed.

I don't see why not. I would ask what the ingredients are and what the % of protein is!! I'm sure it's much better feed anyway!!

I wish that I lived near an Amish community to purchase my chicken feed. Knowing that is probably 100% organic with no additives as they do not fertilize their crops with chemicals. I would say that you will have some of the best chickens around. Ask to see his and go from there.

Thank you for your input. I'll ask what's in it and what % of protein is in it. We've been buying their eggs for years now and they are just wonderful!

If their eggs are wonderful I'd think their feed is fantastic. Lucky you!

It really, really depends. It may be mostly corn and not much else or it could be awesome. The Amish do not coddle their animals; in fact, I'd say most BYC members may be a bit taken aback at how they handle their livestock. You'd have to see it, I guess.

I would think their feed is mostly corn. There's a local store that sells their eggs...I won't touch them with a 10-foot pole.

I wouldn't expect that their food is any higher quality from any other feed store. I live by large communities of amish and I certainly don't hold them up on a pedastle.

And all the amish I know use nothing other than sex links and don't free range them. I have seen alot of hens crammed into relatively small quarters, but do have 'outside' runs.
