If you were to choose a hen strictly for their personality, which ones would you take home?

Yes, chickens are much easier to contain! I've never had guineas but I keep threatening to get some. I know they'd abandon me and end up by our pond or on the neighbors land. Which they may or may not like ;) I've also heard they are snake eaters, which is what I was after!
By the way, my brahmas are the first ones to come running when I go outside, and I've got a very curious golden cuckoo maran. My polish are skittish little buggers. Fun to watch, though :)
Yes, the guineas sound like they would doom me to a broken heart. The mom's have some real issues get
Thanks for the info- I've gotten crossed reports about Brahmas and Polish. Some said the Polish were so docile that any and every bird would pick on them, or they were so sweet they were like babies, another, and I quote, said they were "absolute LUNATICS!" Doesn't sound like the same chickens at all! The Brahmas have been described as very nice or stand-offish. Huh? I know a lot of this comes from the individual chicken personalities and probably the remaining flock dynamics but you'd think theyd have some agreement, wouldn't you? I'm putting you in the yes vote category for the Brahmas- lol I have never heard of a golden cuckoo maran but I will look it up.

Welcome to BYC!
Below is a great article for getting started and you can check out the breed chart inside it. See also helpful links.

Thanks so much!!

WELCOME! Oh, I love the sound of the place you are living. I could love living out our years in a place like yours as well. Colored eggs?? The EE..Easter Eggers, are a fun breed for me. They lay some nice colored eggs, and, the chickens come in a variety of colors. Here is my girl now, and her egg color.

She's beautiful! I finally took the consensus of others and I will receive 3 Easter Egger bantams, 3 Silkie Bantams and 3 Cochin Bantams. Since they won't arrive until August 12th, I have time to change the order if something is wrong with this combination. They are all supposed to be very friendly and calm breeds, I am only getting the females and I might get a few colors to my baby eggs! lol The only thing I haven't been able to find is if they are decent foragers (since tick control was my major issue)- I'll have to send out another question just to see what I've done wrong! lol

I think a lot has to do with hatchery standards, just breeding every which personality comes out. Can't say that for a fact, but I've seen the same contradictions over and over. I know birds are individuals but...

Really, all 90-some chickens come running when I go outside, but there are definitely stand outs in personality. :)

And yes, we are living out our somewhat tarnished golden years here- and we love it. Just trouble getting used to everyone wanting to kill everyone in the animal kingdom!

Everyone has been so helpful in these forums but now I'm even more confused... but that's just me! lol People keep coming back to recommending guineas and I understand they eat a LOT of ticks. I find them cute, even their incessant squawking, but I am so worried about them being unwilling to seek shelter from predators around here and I am also afraid whatever chickens I have will be picked on by them. As I've found, I can get different people telling me the exact opposite of each other so I either have to believe guineas will be the stuff of nightmares and all get killed quickly, not to mention killing everything else, or they will work beautifully, not hurt any chickens, and can co-exist with them in a coop. Somehow, I feel there is some truth in both of those but I don't know what it is. So I canceled my chick order, since it wouldn't come until August anyways, will have a huge coop put in by the end of May, and then I will need to finally commit to some poultry. My husband does want some eggs and I just want a happy group of gals who get along- and want to destroy every tick in the universe! Maybe you can't have poultry if you want everyone to be peaceful and healthy? I just don't know. So, if anyone wants to give me any input into ANY types of chickens, guineas, any groupings that will do well together and survive with as much assistance as I can give, please let me know. I TRULY appreciate the help of all those who are experienced and share their knowledge.

Get the chickens you want!!!

You “can train” the guineas to stay home. Raise them in a separate coop and teach them this is home. They will roost high up and away from most predators. BUT in the end you may start with 15 and end with 8. I can’t have guineas because my German shepherds would destroy them.

Get the chickens you want... have eggs and a benefit of foraging and tick control! Be happy and enjoy life!
