It's a good thing that somebody actually feels the same way I do, I'm not suprised, but I am that they finally spoke up. Do I doubt why these people do what they do- most certainly not.. Do I think there is a better approach to doing what they do.. Yes.

What I simpily cannot understand, disregarding the saldrin guy and his freaks of rarity (that nobody in their right mind has ever heard of, or would even want)

but we're talking about plain, common, ordinary chickens- RIR, BO, Wyand, Rocks, Domin, etc...

Here's what I don't understand- Sure you are going to keep your 10 most elite birds hatched every year, out of 200. Sure you're going to hand pick your buddy's to recieve another 20 birds, but what are you doing with the other 180? 180 chickens??? Not one 10 children, chicken-a-holic family in AMERICA can eat that much chicken in a year. Why would you rather let those genetics waste away, as opposed to not selling to someone else that could potentially be a million dollar spender/ future co- partner?

I do much similar, with my covetted species of choice... My friends and the people I trust, get the good ones, but I'll be darn if I'm going to turn away a potential customer on something average in quality.

Another thought I have... I've been reading posts all week about people using this to improve the 'type' of their stock, like Buff Minorica on the Buff Leghorns (just got done reading it) and the peopel are whinning about having black in the tails.. Do you not think that by using this other stuff, that's where the problems are coming from? not geared specifically at that set of people. Do you people not have any dignity anymore? I mean purebred means purebred- not "improved", why even have chicken shows by breed, if you're going to bring in some crossed up t hing that looks like the breed. 100% is purebred.. NOT 99%.

Anyways, Chris, you want to initial your thoughts.. Here's mine loud and clear...

I also have no problem culling out bad stock. That is one of the reason I picked this breed. I want chicken for my freezer too. If I get good stock going I could sell chicks or hatching eggs also. I live in IA, livestock and chickens are big around here. I just have to know how to do all of this. I am trying to learn. That is why I spend hours on BYC!

For that many being culled, I've heard breeders would grind them all up to sausages and finger licking good meats. If they are good egg layers, you can always get the market to sell culled pullets that don't fit in the breeding program. Having anywhere that number that the OP mentioned, it is not unusual but a fair guide to select half, then cull some more later down the line. So either way it is not wasteful!

This made me understand where the OP was coming from. The OP came off a little harsh to me at first, but I kept reading through, with the mindset to "seek first to understand". Then I came to the post above and I "got it" (the message he was trying to communicate) Breeders do this, I have had 1st hand experience with one who did the very thing.

Going back to keep reading where I left off now.

I am thankful though that not all breeders feel this way or I'd never get anything good quality and would be banned to hatchery types, which by the way I have mostly and love to pieces. But when I do get an opportunity to have something special, I am glad that there are some breeders out there willing to share.
