Ancona Ducks

Pics
Well, I think I'll go with you and Celtic and say Blue.

Yay! i have a blue bird. Too bad. Probobly not much point in breeding him with the blacks, but he may surprise us all with a few others down the road. Maybe i'll inspect the hens, and see if someobody would be a good match. One of them is a little pailer black than the others, she may be a good choice. Did I read that blue comes out of black? All the color stuff I havn't studied up on, and lack memorized info.

agreed blue. I think if you breed him to black you'll get 25% blue 75% black offspring.

I have some girls who, most of their color is a skunk stripe down their back. White wings. Lots of colored feathers - just not visible most of the time!

Lavender has almost a pinkish undertone. Definitely a warm color. I see your bird as a cool steely slate blue color.

And in the pic of the cluster of birds, I really like the speckly black on the far left!

As with any and all breeding set ups be sure the male to female ratio is strong on females or you will have over bred girls with possible injuries. I recommend ordering the Ancona pamphlet from Holdderreads to help judge your potential breeders and cull heavily as with any program. Again this is just friendly advice, but just because you buy eggs or birds from good stock doesnt make those off spring breedable. Out of dozens of Sebastopols eggs we hatched this year we have 2 juveniles worth breeding. The rest are lovely pets, but will do nothing to help improve the breed. I hope those who are collecting birds with hopes of breeding will be honest with themselves and not breed pet quality birds or worse.

I agree! This has been a very heavy culling year for me as well with a lot of my breeds. It seems like the anconas are becoming more popular around here, but I think they are mostly hatchery/pet quality birds. And a lot of people don't realize that you can't tell show quality from pet quality when they are ducklings. They change SO MUCH as they grow!

speaking of culling, I have more hatching today/tomorrow

more to pick from

That's a really good way to think of the colors. The lavender and lilac are "warm" colors and the blue and silver are "cool" colors.

Yes, Holderread's Ancona pamphlet is definitely worth getting if you want to breed Anconas.

Amy they look great! Glad you selected from that hatch. The recent one gave LOTS of super pale babies that I am scratching my head wondering what color they might be, and if they have color. lol
