animal control came and said to get rid of my chickens!

You know how it is, "Oh, we're not at liberty to say who called" yeah right. I'm just getting so sick of people. Just tonight, 3/17, we went to our commissioners meeting, only to find out that we have to get it on the agenda about having chickens in the back yard. Only thing good about this, is its getting us a little more time, and for me to get more signatures on my petition. I've only had a little time so far, and I've got 66 signatures. I imagine I can get quite a few more during the week. The hubby is going to go to city hall tomorrow, and pay our water bill, then find out exactly what we need to do. We have the mans name, but maybe he can find his office, and speak to his secretary about our proposal about the chickens. I had someone tell me the other night after he signed the petition, what are they going to do next, tell us where we have to live? Come on, whats so wrong with having chickens in your backyard, right? How about all the people with snakes, and those that have large wild cats and such, right? All you need to have one of those animals is a permit, a license.
I really appreciate you all pulling for me. Believe me, I'm giving it my best shot. I want to keep my girls!

I would still push for the name of the person who complained.. that no-tell policy is B>S>...

You tell those people at city hall to get the complainant into their office and you show up also.. If it bothers them SO MUCH, they will show up.. If they are just making waves you will never see them.. If they do not show up, make city hall drop the issue..

I am really happy though because it looks like here in Orlando(Central FL) we might just get our laws changed sooner than expected. As i wrote in the thread pertaining to the cause( which makes me laugh the thread still doesnt get as much hits/people dont care as we talked about before..wow/lol) we came out in the newspaper and we actually have had a great hit and positive comments going about with the cause of changing our laws. With this happening I got a call two days later the article was printed in the Orlando sentinel, it was a man from this non profit organization in Downtown Orlando that is willing to help us all with the cause here in Central FL. He and his wife are activists and have a school that is all about sustainability including keeping poultry.He knows and has worked with allot of people around the State of FL, including universities like UCF, etc. I am actually going to meet with him and his wife today at the school in Downtown Orlando and talk about how we can be able to approach this...so please wish us luck.... BTW were you able to read the article?

I said it once and i will say it again, I bet that once our laws in Central FL(orange county)get changed many counties all around Florida including Pompano and many south florida counties will follow, it is just opening the eyes of your authorities.

I think thats fantastic you get to meet with he and his wife! Getting an article in the paper is awesome too! Orlando Sentinel is owned or owns our SunSentinel paper here in S. Fl? Did you know that? Maybe they will print that article down here as well. No, I did not see the article, I'd love to! Let me tell you though, going to the commissioners meeting was kind of scary. I guess that I should be scared, but you feel so intimidated, if you know what I mean? I can talk in front of people, if I feel comfortable, but I have to get that way first!

Please keep me posted on all the happenings up there as well. I will keep you posted here too. Lets just fight this dumb law together, okay? Many hands, make light work, my parents always said, and its very true.

Well I am happy you are doing something about this! I am going to actually talk to the organization wanting to help out tomorrow but i will let you know about it. What I think you should do is maybe ask your newspaper to cover a type of story regarding keeping poultry, like the one I had on keeping or poultry. Even though we havent changed our laws yet you can be able to give a hearing on it this way to open up the ears and eyes of people to do something about...It would be an awsome idea!!

Well here is the articles where we were mentioned LOL...the second one is an article covered by La prensa newspaper an hispanic based newspaper that is based in orlando, tampa, miami and NYC. Google translate it to read it as it is a very nice article...i liked it better than the orlando sentinel article because they actually make out the points regarding it....

Try going to your zoning department and asking for a variance. You'll have to get permission from you neighbors. Maybe bring in a note from each saying they have no problem with it, etc.

I can look up the zoning department here. The ordanance is in the hand book that the animal control gives out. It does state that this is residential and not zoned for livestock. But, as we all know, our chickens are our pets, what part of that don't they understand. Just like if you have a dog, cat, fish, rabbit, etc. some people prefer other animals.
Several years ago, our priest at our church had a huge aviary, it went the whole length of the rectory. Do you believe, people actually complained on the poor man. Good thing was, he was never told he had to take it down, and get rid of his beloved birds. I was so happy for him. I loved to hear his birds as you walk up to church. I think people need to get a life sometimes, especially, if the birds are not running around in their yards, or making noise as to disturb anyone, don't you?

I'm up in Jacksonville, and I spoke to the Zoning department about it and that's what the supervisor told me to do if anyone wanted to keep them.

I asked if people were allowed to have pot bellied pigs in a neighborhood and he said yes. Kind of crazy.​

I know, my animal control officer told me that I can KEEP my ducks, just not the chickens. I think thats just crazy, why not chickens. they say they are livestock!
