animal control came and said to get rid of my chickens!

So - you still havent heard back from the Commissioners office? Hmm.. I'd be a thorn in their side like no tomorrow - I'd also have the ordinance in front of me and ask them to show me where FOWL is defined given you can keep ducks but not chickens. Fowl is fowl and unless there is a distinct separation of which breeds you can and cannot have.... they have no case. This jerk keeps calling ACO on you, yet there is no actual law that you have been cited for breaking (from what I've read in your post so far) - then you can hit this jerk with harrassment. YUP! And I'd do it too... for every call he makes...file charges of harrassment with the ACO that comes to your door. Look up how you can do it before you do it, the laws are out there. Then file a case in court (civil court) against him to stop him from doing it. ACO should know better and should be telling this guy to knock it off, its wasting their time and taxpayers money to keep coming out because "he doesnt like what you have"

If the law doesnt specifically state CHICKENS - and they just say "well we frown upon it" - too bad for them.... show me the law in black and white, or you can frown all you want to buddy boy.

Too many people are afraid of upsetting "officials" but those same "officials" have no issue or qualms with railroading over our rights.

*gets off soap box*

Dont stop.. keep pushing... and I would put LATTICE or something up on the top of your fence so that your nosy butt neighbor couldnt look over any longer - or run electrical wiring and shock his nosy tail *grins*

Sorry.. I have issues at the moment ROFL!!

I know about issues, no need to appoligize! The ordanance says no chickens, BUT, it basically refers to livestock, which they aren't, and such as agriculture, which again, they aren't! They are my pets, each with her own name! I told the ACO that, he did agree. You see, they say that they are a complaint run division, and they have to come out on all calls, even if it is the jerk next door. Then again, one of them, the ACO'S would probably like to slap a fine on us, because he has come out here so often. There is another Commissioners Meeting this coming Tuesday, which we will be going to again. I won't let this rest, believe me. Because it makes no sense, I'm really bothering no one. Its just that some people like to make others lives miserable. It feels like they find me to target. I know that I'm not alone, you see it on this forum regularly. Funny thing is though, the one ACO, not my favorite, said that he was going to call our division Commissioner, hum, wonder what happened. Gee, haven't heard back from him, nor have I seen him since last week???

Wonder if he got a message from him that they would be considering a variance to the ordanance?

Well I'll have my fingers crossed for you that it all turns out the way you need it to!

If the ACO starts giving you a hard time about coming out so often then you need to tell him/her to take that issue up with the person calling in about you - because you certainly are looking into it for harrassment yourself!

Seriously - there is something out there, some kind of law that prevents harrassment like that. I know we have it here in VA - I dont know if you have it there where you are. Keep checking though... and if the ACO gets snotty, ask for his supverisor and go from there with your complaint. You have just as much rights as the guy complaining if not more given you're being harrassed.

Really though, look into something that will go on top of your fence - lattice is light, and you can fill it in with ivy or whatever you want to - keep that nosy neighbor from peeking in on your property. You can even use corrugated plastic, know what I'm talking about? They use it for roofing...comes in all types of colors.

Henny'sMom, thats what the ACO says, that pretty soon this guy is not going to be satisified with his making us get rid of our chickens, and go over his head to his supervisor. Thats what I felt like saying, I would like to talk to his supervisor, and tell him that the ACO'S have been out here several times, but that I'm not giving up, I'm fighting to keep my girls.

Helllo Barbara, Its been so long since Ive been to the forum...lol Anyway guess what.....This reporter is getting me angry he never returned my call. He was soo busy the day I called him he said he was going to return my call and still hasnt. I am going to call him first off tomorrow and ask him of what you can do with your newspaper down in Pompano.

I have faith in you...YOU CAN DO!

I actually havent given up either, its all just time and effor. I am still waiting for the plan of action that this guys from the the school of Hollistic living is trying got help me with as he has been busy too, but I have faith we should have these laws changed up here in orlando as well.

Since you are still waiting for a reply from the commisioners, try making that story making it seem how dramatic it is that people in large cities can have Poultry and we cant in our own backyards. Make it something large to put a cork in that neighbors mouth and realize who he thinks he is and where he is living in....Some people really just dont get it..LOL

Well keep at it and ill email you tomorrow with the information.

Confederate Jasmine is a great climber and grows REALLY fast - and thick. If you put a lattice up at the top of your fence it should cover it in no time.

Or you could hammer nails into the top of your fence and cut off the heads.... if he's hanging on the fence to get a look in your yard he'd get a nasty suprise.

We just got an ordinance change- perhaps you could forward this info to your commission?

If you go to my page, there are links to the city's new ordinance and the cover memo for the change.

Sometimes, a good example makes it easier for change to be made.

Thanks for all the ideas! This guy is unbelieable. My girls have been in my house now for nearly 1 week. I let them out during the day in a safe part, that is from all the poo

I'm glad it has tile. The clean up at night is very time consuming to say the least. First I have to scrape the poo off, then sweep, then mop................ Takes a little bit, but in the end, I believe it will be worth it. Starting this week, we are going to be moving them over to the other side of the yard, so they can have a place again, and I can have that part of my house back!

We've got another Commissioners Meeting again this Tuesday, so we will be back at them. I won't give up. They deserve to be here as well as any other pet we have.

DONT DO THAT - its illegal to do it. You cant even do it in your own house (i.e,. putting boards with nails under your window sills for would be thieves) - its pre-meditated harmful intent - and you will go to jail.

no no no.

The problem with so many of these laws against chickens is that they are more to keep out big chicken operations than a small backyard flock, but they do not differenciate between the two in the laws. A huge factory farm isn't 5 pet hens in a dog pen in someone's yard.
