Another coon goes for a ''ride''

I have to agree with the others..
But only because relocating them is cruel to THEM...
They are placed in a strange place... they'll have to fight to stay alive in a new territory... and its hard enough to stay alive in the wilderness.
Plus.. the stress of having to find new food and water sources and safe sleeping places...
They'll have to deal with new coons too, and most likely be attacked by them......
Its just better for the animal to put them down humanely....
Good luck with them..

My kids wanted me to relocate animals that I trapped. I was NOT interested in putting a wild animal in my new car, packing up the kids, and driving off to the local park or forrest. I really hate killing anything, but I can not allow overpopulation, property damage, and increased disease risk(roundworms for one). Our laws say no relocation.Shoot, some places don't allow you to relocate OR kill-you have to pay to have someone to come take the animal away and kill it.

It's very honorable of you to come back and post as you did. It's hard to admit wrongs. Now, would you mind calling my FIL and having a talk?

I've offered to come do the dispatching FOR HIM and he still insists on relocating... and get this, he only moves them a whopping mile, mile and a half.

I think his is "age related softness" too.

Well...that would be my next question....How is the best way to cook a coon ? ....I cooked one years ago, but to this day, my daughter wont eat at my house

unless I promise her that I am serving either beef, pork or chicken !
If I am going to dispatch these coons again, I might as well dress them out and fill my freezer.
I have been feeding my porky husband ground turkey for years ( for his health )

and he still doesnt realize it is not beef.....hummmmmmmmm

Wow, a lot of kill, kill, kill. I would relocate, too. These are wild animals, they are doing what they do to survive. We draw them near because of our chickens and what ever else they like. I just can't kill an animal because I draw them in. Sorry, unless it has rabies it will be relocated. That's just me.

Cook it in a crock pot with green onions, carrots, seasonings you like, potatoes, & stew it for a couple of hours & serve with greens & cornbread & cold beer or beverage of choice.

BBQ is good too. If you trap/shoot it, you can eat it. Give it a try, save grocery money and impress/disgust your relatives you invite for over for vittles. It's a good way to get those boomerang kids to pack back up and move out again. And a Coonskin Cap makes a statement (I'm not sure what, but it's quite a statement)

How do you know if they have rabies or not?? They could be infected and the signs may not have manifested yet. A racoon usually travels within a 15 mile radius, so if you relocate it any closer than that, you are probably going to be catching the same coon! It is illegal to relocate animals, primarily because of the risk of spreading diseases like rabies, to an area where it had not before been a problem. I hope you don't live near me, we don't have a rabies problem here...yet!

I have to commend Mary Ann on her decision to NOT relocate! I too, live within the Mark Twain Nat'l Forest, and like I said, don't have a rabies problem in my area. They did have some rabid bats south of me about 20 miles, and rabid skunks and coons 30 or so miles to the north. I have every kind of predator you can think of up here, my answer is ELECTRIC FENCING and a secure coop & run.
