Hi! Welcome to BYC!

I'm not sure what the conditions were that caused the hens to peck at you. A hen will peck when you're trying to take an egg she is sitting on. That's generally a broody hen, and unless you want her to raise chicks for you, she should be taken off the eggs entirely.

Another possibility is space concerns. Remember when you are getting your coop and run together to allow a minimum of 4 sf per bird in the coop and 10 sf per bird in the run, and IMHO, this is not enough space.

How many chickens are you considering? Do you want a rooster too, or just hens?

I agree with others here that if you start with chicks you and they will bond and you'll be surprised at how friendly they actually are.

Chickens are fun and entertaining! Give them what they need and you'll fall in love with the happy little fluffy creatures running around!
