Another test for chicken experts: Pullet or Cockerel? (new8.5 wk pics)

Now why on EARTH would you think we are awful horrible people?! Because we don't agree on if it's a male or a female? Wow...24 years in the field seems to have made you a bit sensitive.

Really sorry if facts offend you, or debate. No one has been mean. We have different opinions.

People often read the first five posts and don't realize there's been a discussion of something like sex linked color and just guess based on their own breed experience in different breeds. Fine and dandy.

Some don't understand color genetics at all and gender linked colors even less. You can't know what you don't know and that's fine.

Nobody has been nasty. We disagree is all. That whole democracy thing in action.

I can't wait to see what this chick turns out to be.

I love reading about all this genetics from everyone that knows it well. Great info for a newby like me to learn.

Oh yea it is also funny to read how the post play out.

Well, I have a neighbor with over 40 years in chickens who wouldn't know a breed standard if it bit him and now he comes over asking me if bird he got is purebred or decent type. And he can't hardly tell a dominique from a barred rock.

But he's gotten interested in learning which is fun for both of us, I print him standards when he wants them. He thought I was weird at first and I thought him a hillbilly - lol we were both right but we get along just fine and are fast friends.

I consider it a high compliment that he now has quite a large group of my chickens and is selling other people on the breed, even if they are just my hatchery quality stuff I am done with.

This is NOT a sex linked cross.

For a sex-linked cross there are several conditions that must be met. #1, the gene used must be a sex-linked gene
#2, the allele present must be apparent at hatching or shortly thereafter
#3, the female must carry the dominant allele
#4, the male must be pure for the recessive allele.

When dealing with barring, the hen must be barred and the cock not barred. Male offspring will have barring and female offspring will not. These are black sexlinks.

When dealng with silver/gold, the hen must be silver and the cock gold. Additionally, neither should carry white (either dominant or recessive), as white is not sex-linked and can cause a genetically gold bird to appear to be silver. Male offspring will be golden (one copy of silver, one of gold) and female offspring will be gold. Golden can look like dirty silver/pale gold/cream. These are red sex-links.

Umm then why when I plug a colombian rooster and an RIR hen into the gene calculator of Henks, do I get, white hens and yellow roosters?

Because that's also how it's working out here with delaware to partridge rock - essentially the same combo. And I get.... columbian white pullets and yellow cockerals. Real easy sort.

Because your not going to able to tell the difference between them as chicks very well since white birds can have yellow-ish down as chicks. If the rooster is a RIR and the hen columbian, THEN it would work as the hens should be reddish as chicks.

Well so far it's different enough to tell, they're yellower/darker downed, and since delaware - boys go barred to boot as soon as they feather. Also they've got eye liner and the girls don't. I had three batches of pure dels, so I know pure co down color pretty well, it's a pale neon yellow, add a red hen and it's golder...

I suppose if you didn't know the true yellow and no eye liner, then the differences would be more confusing.

Actually, I feel badly for T-spit. Here he is a newcommer to the group and no 'welcome', no 'glad you're here'. He was chided for misspelling after being scolded for being overly-sensitive. It was implied his opinion is less-worthy because he has only posted twice. If your first intro to the group is a cold shoulder...

Please remember words that are typed light-heartedly can read harshly without the lively tone in your voice.

Oh, and the comb is very red/developed for a pullet at this age, but my LBs and BR both developed color/size weeks earlier than my other breeds so I wouldn't want to speculate. Let nature unfold and enjoy the moment. Beautiful, expressive eyes no matter what the sex. Have fun guessing.

nelli21, welcome to you from Oregon. That's a beautiful chicken, good luck to you either way. In the picture, I do not detect what I call "a keen firery look in the eyes" of a rooster; either that or yours is just young & sweet natured. This was a good topic to post & I look forward to your future comments & discovery of the sex.

dretd, welcome to you from Oregon, also. Thank you for your well worded comments, as I was "thinking my words over" first before doing the same. After seeing what looked like "mud slinging" that was developing amongst the "experts," I was ashamed to be a part of the BYC & it bummed me out for the day. I'm sure you are all very nice people & very passionate about the chicken breeds you love. Looking forward to more fun on the BYC.
