Answer to the Delaware Dilemma

ok.....I am in.

I actually located a guy not far from me that has been breeding Delawares for 4 years, working to improve his birds. I have not seen them yet but will this weekend. the pictures I did see of his hens look nice. I am getting a quad of them on Saturday. Wish me luck! This sounds like a very challanging bird to breed.

Welcome to the cult of the delaware! There are a number of folks here committed to improving the breed and with that comes multiple approaches.

I can't seem to find it with my searching and I don't recall off hand, but will breeding any two birds with the cuckoo/barring and orange/red coloration produce a percentage of offspring similar to the Delaware?

I do recall the large fowl was created through sports of Barred Rock roos over New Hampshire hens. I am playing around with bantams this year and ordering a variety of miniaturized dual purpose birds, including Barred Rocks, Dominiques, New Hampshires and Buckeyes. I am definitely planning the BR/NH cross, but I'm wondering if I might get Delaware-like coloring with a rosecomb with a Dominique x Buckeye cross?

It'll take more than 1 generation to get anything that looks relatively like a Delaware, at least that's what I think...

Kathy is working on F3 birds now that are supposed to be true, pure Dels. So maybe in a few years you can have some pure bantams?

I think it would depend on the whole genetic code - which I know little about. The BR/NH is the cross used as far as I know.

Kathy has F2's on the ground, two females that I know of, and several males to choose from for the next stage.

I was trying to track down a followup on Kathy's birds, but can't seem to find it easily by searching. Can anyone narrow it down where I might find photos of her birds? I remember when she first started hatching F1, but I haven't seen anything since that. (I quit following the Dell thread because I had to get rid of mine. Too painful!)

I have tried over and over again to reply to your PM. For some reason it won't go through.

I can't post any pictures.............

But.......... if you click "quote" on my blank post above, you will see that I did attempt to put one picture in. Any more than one, won't even do that.
