My chicken has grade 5 bumblefoot and osteomyletsis. I know she needs cloxacillan or another type of antibiotic but I'm having such a hard time getting a veterinarian to prescribe me it and also getting an appointment for her (not a lot of avian vets in my area)

Has anybody found a way around this conundrum?

Here are three online sources of where many of us get antibiotics or some other pet meds without a prescription:

Jedds https://jedds.com/collections/poultry
Twin City Poultry https://www.twincitypoultrysupplies.com/
https://thecanaryfinchstore.com

Have you a need to learn how to remove the core and treat bumblefoot? We've got some excellent articles here if you need, I'll get them for you.
Thank you this is fantastic!
We've been removing them the ways it says online.
We are having issues with them coming back as a scab and and not really the hard rock we usually find.

I had no idea this was even a thing!! Thank you so much for these links.

You're very welcome! :)

Just post in the ER forum though if you're not sure if you do need an antibiotic, and if so, which ones work best for which ailment. Amoxicillin is by far the most popular, but depending on the disease or illness, another kind may be necessary.

I went with doxy as I suspect bumblefoot into bone issue. My gal had a plug alongside/in her toenail. Got heat, swelling, and redness. I'm hoping my research guided me to the right solution.

Thanks so much for sharing these links! I wish I knew about this before I made an appointment with the vet for tomorrow. I'll still go through with it to see what they say but my search results kept saying I couldn't get doxycycline without a prescription!

Do you happen to have any experience with drawing out the infection with a needle? I tried surgery on my hen who has stage 5 bumblefoot and I wish I tried that first instead of cutting into it. There was no core or pus.. just a lot and lot of blood 😞

Were you able to find out she has osteomyletsis with an X-ray? I'm hoping my hen won't be needing one but she also has grade 5 bumblefoot that started spreading into her leg. The bump on her leg did seem to flatten with amoxicillin though, but not so much the one on the bottom of her foot.

Is this irresponsible?? Without a script?
It is not as long as you know for a fact there's an infection, or like in cases of respiratory issues that linger beyond a few days.

Most things we humans come down with, we get by without antibiotics. The same with chickens. But when we know we're really sick, we have to go to the doctor. Our chickens can be taken to a vet, but that's if you have one within driving distance. In the case of no vet, then we have to do what we think is best. You have a lot of help on BYC to help you make the right choices.

If you are unsure if you need a certain antibiotic, just post in the ER I linked above, and you can tag @Eggcessive if nobody answers you. She's a guru about which antibiotic for which ailment. Now that I tagged her, she may visit and concur with you or suggest something else. A second opinion is what we're all about! :)
