You could just use a zip tie. Once set it won't tighten. If the birds aren't full grown, you'll have to change them as they grow.

That's true. But I would want to wrap/pad it so I don't hurt their legs.

Wonder what I could use to pad them?

Any fabric rolled or folded up. I could sew it in a wad then hot glue it to the inside of the zip tie. Or if you have leather scraps or shammys you could roll them around.

I heard from a friend that mint is repellent to ants...maybe try putting some sprigs in areas that they frequent...

I thought about sewing a tube, or buying some kind of tube to slip over the zip tie but it wouldn't protect the legs where the tie goes back into itself. As I think about putting padding inside of the zip, I just can't figure out how it would work and not be uncomfortable in some way or keep them from pulling on it and the zip be on their skin anyways. I think I am going to have to go with the leather but how long would it take for the leather to get hard?

They use leather for falconry. That's what I'll have to do. I have some extra leather sitting around from pieces bought at the Renn Faire. Then just attach so memo d of leash to that leather leg band.
