Any Geocachers here?

Have tried a couple of times with the kids. I know we've been close, but never actually found the cache.

The one named "the Jersey Devil made us do it again" is at a church not far from us. I know we were close, but somehow we managed to stir up a bees nest and had to leave. Haven't been back since. Makes me feel pretty stupid everytime I get an e-mail saying that someone else has found it.

What model of Gps do you have? You should be able to take a waypoint reading with your Gps. I would leave the Gps on your intended hiding spot for at least five minutes, then see what the accuracy of the readings are. Usually, you're good if it's withing 15-20 feet. The distance can vary from day to day, depending on the satellite positions, cloud cover, time of day, etc. If in doubt, return on another day to take a reading and average the results with the previous day's reading.

Bees or wasps would make me leave too! That being said, no better time than winter to tackle such a cache, as the little buggers will be dormant!

Yes, I am. Also find the old survey point markers. Benchmarking they call it, found a few of those. Went on to find the missing property stakes for my neighbour's quarter section with my GPS to get close then a metal detector. First you need to do a bunch of math based on the location of the nearest known survey benchmarks or property stakes. It will also only work for quarter section lines but still fun if your really into figuring this stuff out. My Garmin was really helpful since I could enter calculated distances rather than figure out the lat/long but there is a website with a Java that will do it for you if you need it.

The box of choice are ammo boxes, some use butter containers, Tupperware or other plastic containers. Tupperware lasts longer because it's good quality. There are micro caches you just sign a log on that are tiny and hard to find but fun to go after.
You don't need math to Geocache, that was for something else they were talking about.
