Any Home Bakers Here?

I had my first flock around 50 years ago. As all things go I have learned a lot since.

think I am going more on 55 years I can remember

Back then the birds were for eggs and meat. Now I show birds at poultry shows. I still get my eggs and have some birds in the freezer.

I spent 35 years showing dogs no urge all to do it to birds

Okay Aria, here's the recipe for the honey wheat bread:

3 C. warm water (110 degrees)
2 pkgs. (.25 oz. each) active dry yeast
2/3 C. honey, divided
5 C. bread flour
5 Tbsp. melted butter, divided
1 Tbsp. salt
3.5 - 6 C. whole wheat flour (recipe leaves the amount up to you - see directions. I used about 4 - 4.5 cups total)

In a large bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and 1/3 C. honey. Add 5 C. bread flour, and stir to combine. Let it sit for 30 minutes, or until big and bubbly.

Mix in 3 Tbsp. melted butter, 1/3 C. honey, and salt. Stir in 2 C. whole wheat flour. Flour a flat surface and knead with whole wheat flour until not real sticky - just pulling away from the counter, but still sticky to touch. This may take an additional 2-4 C. of whole wheat flour. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the surface of the dough. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled.

Punch down, and divide into 3 loaves. Place in greased 9" x 5" loaf pans, and allow to rise until dough has topped the pans by 1".

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes; do not overbake. Lightly brush the tops of the loaves with melted butter when done to prevent crust from getting hard. Cool completely.

Hope you like it!
THis is the recipe I posted a few days ago. It's from allrecipes. It is really good!

I was a late bloomer. Got a divorce and bye bye went the chickens. We processed them all. We sold the property and went our separate ways. After that is was quite a few years before I started a flock again.

I had an Irish Setter years ago, but he was dumber than a rock. We had our newspaper delivered in a plastic bag and it would get tossed on the ground in front of the house for delivery and he would go out and get the paper. We went to classes with him and he didn't do too well with all of the other dogs around. His attention span wasn't good. He did learn some commands like come, sit, lay down, stay, NO, paper, ride, etc. I think I started trying to train him too late. If I had started earlier when he was a puppy. If I knew then what I know now.

I have been showing birds for around 10 years. I bathe the birds before a show. At least they will smell good. I have done pretty well. I have had a couple of champions and the birds often place well. They get lots of vegies from the garden and some free range time. I don't let them all out at once because I don't want them to mix breed. So every day I let some out for awhile. They like to scratch in the compost. I usually grow plenty of collards. They love them. Back when we had chickens it was totally different than it is today with the backyard flocks. I don't remember buying feed for the chickens.

Oh my. I haven't kept up with ALL the comments on here, and guess I missed your posting of the bread recipe. I had mentioned the other day that I made some honey wheat bread, and so when Aria asked for the honey wheat bread recipe, I thought she was referring to the bread I had made. Sorry for printing a duplicate recipe. This is a recipe I printed out from the internet previously - not sure if it was from allrecipes or not. I agree with you that it's really good.

We did not buy chicken food back in the day either but we had a feed mill on the farm life was so simple back then gigreen.gif

Yay, 10k posts!

It took over 3 years, but still going strong!

Sorry I missed the milestone, Congratulations.

It may or may not sound crazy, but my sphere of friends has grown in quantum numbers since getting active in byc. When we moved from VA to TN, we knew four or five folk. Today, we probably have 3-4 friends locally. Still keep in touch with folks back in VA, but they think this whole country thing was crazy. And they don't understand and can't talk chickens, turkeys, or ducks. What's up with that?

:thumbsup....they are the crazy ones, not us :D
