Any Home Bakers Here?

After unloading stacking 2 cords of wood today along with basic daily chores I am done goodnight
For sure....you should be tired. That is more than one day's work.
Penny, we have burned wood for years. My husband usually has
gotten the wood on our property. NOW??? He has ordered wood.
We are expecting it any day and it will need to be stacked in our
woodshed. For years we burned only wood to heat our house...now
we have Gas and we use the wood to enjoy early Spring and Fall.
We do enjoy a wood stove. We have a Vermont Casting Defient.
She is a beauty and we have a tiny EcoFan for the top of stove to circulate the heat. NO electric...quite...the heat motivates the Fan. The Eco Fan was made in Canada...is great. Looking to
replace our Rhode Island Red....not much luck yet. Aria

Who is Hattie? Perhaps I need a Hattie to protect my Flock.
Just mixed a 2 pound loaf of Sourdough AND put my Sourdough
Starter in a CLEAN JAR. And Thanks again to Penny, I have the
other jar soaking overnight.
Both the Cakes look so GOOD. YES. Coconut Cake Recipe Debby.

Having a quality woodstove makes a huge difference when using wood to heat a house. We had 2 Quadra-Fire wood stoves in Wyoming and hardly ever had to use the propane furnace for heat... maybe during the day when we were at work. When we bought our current place, we installed a Quadra Fire pellet insert into existing, granite fireplace. Not only does it heat that 1/2 of the house + the upstairs somewhat, but it also closes up the chimney to reduce heat loss that way.

I made cut-out cookies yesterday, the cookie dough is extreamely sticky so I think I need to add more flour. Maybe its the eggs, my hens are laying super sized large eggs right now, they fit in the egg cartons from the store but just barely. Also, I ran out of granulated sugar and used bakers superfine sugar for 1/2 the sugar quantity called for. I wonder if that has any impact on how sticky this dough is also.

DARN...it happened again. We lost our Rhode Island Red today.
We think it was a Coon? Floyd set a trap. We keep them in the coop and the run when we are at the Cottage....today we were
home the Weather was super and Floyd decided to let them Free
run...our Chicken Area is fenced. Animal dug it's way in. We like
to have them enjoy the Yard...But guess we cannot. We have loads
of trees and animals around. Unhappy Aria
I am so sorry!

Raccoons are usually nocturnal. Do you have bobcats there? They attack in the day too.

@Aria, if it's any consolation, I lost a nice Golden Sex Link hen to a golden eagle once. It's pretty tough. Sorry to hear that happened to your Rhode Island red.

We have lots of predators here in Idaho. My pet dogs, Eagles, peregrine falcons, Hawks, raccoons, the works. Here's a picture I took on Memorial Day weekend. As much as I like seeing a bald eagle, it influenced me enough to get my rabbits run covered.

I've only lost two hens in entire time I have raised chickens, but it's still tough. I lost one to my pet dogs, and I lost another to a golden eagle.

On a side note, I made ricotta cheese tonight and I ate a pork chop dinner that my sister made.

That is a lot of fun!

Is the starter bubbling today?

Thanks Penny. We have always had problems with predators. We
have 16 acres of Woods and lots of tall evergreens around on our
property. And we are set back away from houses, and predators
love the area. We MUST keep our chickens in the coop and the run. We have tried ad tried and it usually Happens. Aria
You might be able to free range for part of the day by suing electrified netting. Some kind of cover if hawks are a problem

I purchased twenty pounds of flour, and ten of sugar. The cashier asked if I was baking something special. I wanted to tell her I was practicing to be a ghost. She said she has forty apple trees, plus peach, pear and a multitude of other trees. I’m jealous.
I accidentally bought Hershey with almonds for the s’mores. I’m sure it will be fine. I don’t think I’ve tried pb cups in s’mores yet.
When I buy in bulk from costco, I do not get any questions about what the purpose is LOL. I do at a local store here. The have finally given up trying to figure out what I am going to cook. It is kind of pointless since I usually shop for a week using a shopping list made from a menu.

The smores will be very good with Hershey with almonds bars!
