How far gone can sourdough starter be and be brought back to life? Mine has been forgotten in the fridge for a month and now has black liquid on top

It is not bad unless you see pink. Black if fine and it should start bubbling after it is replenished.

Toss all but half a cup, add a cup of warm milk and a cup of flour to the half cup. Repeat a couple of days and it should be back to normal.

I read an article about getting a starter going from a dig in Egypt. The starter was dried and thousands of years old.

That's amazing about the old Egyptian starter @ronott1 . I wonder if anyone tried making something from it?

Hope you knew I was just kidding about the internet yolk

. And I know exactly what you mean about the recipe variations, even those from the better sites can be quite disappointing.

If you bake the Babka, would love to hear how it compares to the one you remember and please post pics

Yes. I know you were.

And thank you for the recipe NFC! I'll have to do a little shopping, then I'll give 'er a go!

Well, I gave the oven another chance. I put it on convection -which you lower the temp 25 degrees- and I think my thermostat is problematic.
They did not burn, but the cookies browned awfully quick.

I used insulated pans so nothing burned thankfully.

I think we should sample them for you, just to make sure they're ok.

Oatmeal raisin has to be the best cookie ever.

That actually sounds quite interesting. Been trying to find snacks for kids recess that I can bake that are a little healthier and they sound like they might be okay. I like to have stuff they can just grab and take when we are in a rush but don't Want to have them eating cake and chocolate biscuits every day.

Anybody got any tried and true lunch box baking that fits into that catagory?
